Michigan licenses social workers without an LCSW title: the clinical tier is the licensed master's social worker (LMSW) carrying a clinical designation, alongside a macro designation for non-clinical practice.
Below it sit the licensed bachelor's social worker (LBSW) and two social service technician registrations, and each license level has a limited version for the supervised years.
The clinical designation takes at least 4,000 hours of post-degree experience over not less than 2 years, earned only on the limited LMSW license, plus the ASWB Clinical exam β requirements the rules list side by side for the full license.

A licensed master's social worker with the clinical designation.
Michigan has no "LCSW" title; the clinical tier is a designation on the LMSW license (MCL 333.18503(2); R 338.2953).
LBSW and the LMSW with a macro designation, plus registered social service technician and limited social service technician registrations, and limited LBSW and limited LMSW licenses held during the supervised-experience years.
LMSW: a master's or doctoral degree in social work from a board-approved program; a CSWE-accredited program, or one the CSWE recognizes as equivalent through a memorandum of understanding, is approved (R 338.2923).
LBSW: a bachelor's degree in social work from a board-approved program.
At least 4,000 hours of post-degree social work experience accrued over not less than 2 years, earned only while holding the limited LMSW license; supervisory review at least 4 hours per month (at least 2 of them individual, in person or by live telecommunication); no more than 2,080 hours in any 12-month period; an average of at least 16 but not more than 40 hours per week (R 338.2949(3); R 338.2953(b)).
Bachelor's examination for the LBSW; Advanced Generalist for the macro designation and Clinical for the clinical designation.
The board adopts no ASWB Masters examination, and the rules list the exam and the 4,000 hours as parallel requirements for the full license, with no order stated between them (R 338.2925; R 338.2949(1)).
A Michigan-licensed master's social worker holding the macro or clinical designation, as applicable, whose license is in good standing throughout the supervision period (R 338.2949(2)).
The rules name no separate board-approved supervisor credential.
Not enacted.
As of September 2026 Michigan is not on the Social Work Licensure Compact commission's list of member jurisdictions, and the commission is not yet issuing multistate licenses.
A 3-year renewal cycle with not less than 45 continuing education contact hours per period, including at least 5 in ethics, at least 2 in pain and symptom management and at least 2 in human trafficking, plus implicit-bias training under R 338.7001 to R 338.7005 (R 338.2961).
A registration, not a license: an individual specially trained to practice only under the supervision of a licensed master's social worker or a licensed bachelor's social worker (MCL 333.18501(1)(h)).
A limited registration, renewable for not more than 1 year, for someone with 2 years of college who is employed in, or has an offer of employment in, social work with a board-recognized agency (MCL 333.18507(2)).
A limited license to earn the 2-year postdegree experience the full bachelor's license requires, held while practicing under the supervision of a licensed master's social worker in a board-approved agency, health facility, institution, or other entity (MCL 333.18509(2); 333.18506).
The bachelor's-level license, on a board-approved bachelor's degree in social work, 2 years of supervised postbachelor's experience under a licensed master's social worker and the ASWB Bachelor's examination; its scope excludes psychotherapy (MCL 333.18509(1)(a); 333.18501(4); R 338.2925).
The limited license on which the 4,000 supervised hours are earned: valid for 1 year and renewable no more than 6 times, held while accumulating supervised work experience in a board-approved setting under a Michigan LMSW (R 338.2947(3), (4)).
The full master's-level license carrying the non-clinical macro designation: a master's or doctoral social work degree, 2 years of supervised master's-level experience, 4,000 post-degree hours on the limited license and the ASWB Advanced Generalist examination (MCL 333.18509(1)(b); R 338.2949; R 338.2951).
The clinical tier: the same master's license carrying the clinical designation, on the ASWB Clinical examination and 4,000 hours supervised by an LMSW holding the clinical designation; Michigan issues no license titled LCSW (R 338.2953; MCL 333.18503(2)).
Michigan issues no license called a clinical social worker.
The master's-level license is the licensed master's social worker, and the rules split it into a clinical designation (R 338.2953) and a macro designation (R 338.2951); a licensee can carry both by adding the second under R 338.2949(4).
Title use is written into the statute, and it protects both levels: an LBSW and an LMSW may each use "social worker", while each license's full title and letters belong to that license alone.
The statutory definition of master's-level practice is where the clinical work lives, including assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders and psychotherapy in private practice or other settings.
For a job search the practical takeaway: postings, license verifications and payer forms in Michigan say LMSW, not LCSW, so read the designation, not the acronym.
At the bachelor's level the LBSW exists as its own license, and the technician registrations sit below both.
For how pre-licensure titles line up across states, see the LMSW, LPC-A and AMFT title alphabet.
βOnly a licensed master's social worker shall use the title "licensed master's social worker", "social worker", or "l.m.s.w.".β
The LMSW requires a master's or doctoral degree in the field of social work from a college or university social work program approved by the board.
The rule makes approval automatic for a program accredited by the CSWE, or recognized by the CSWE through a memorandum of understanding as equivalent, and leaves the board free to approve a non-CSWE program it finds substantially equivalent.
In the rules read there is no separate coursework audit, but the statute directs that requirements for clinical practice include at least coursework in normal human development and diagnosis, assessment and treatment using a variety of psychotherapeutic methods or techniques (MCL 333.18518(2)(b)); confirm with the board how it is applied.
The LBSW requires a bachelor's degree in social work from a board-approved program.
One employment quirk sits inside the license statute itself: a licensed master's social worker employed by a school district must also meet the school social worker requirements in the revised school code, so a school job carries a second rulebook you should check with the district and the board.
For why boards write program accreditation into the degree rule, see CSWE vs CACREP vs COAMFTE accreditation.
βA social work education program accredited by CSWE or recognized by the CSWE through a memorandum of understanding as equivalent to a social work education program accredited by CSWE is approved by the board.β
The clinical designation requires at least 4,000 hours of post-degree social work experience accrued over not less than 2 years, earned after graduation as verified by the program, under the supervision of a Michigan LMSW holding the clinical designation.
The same 4,000-hour, 2-year floor implements the statute's experience requirement for the LMSW at all, so even the non-clinical macro designation rests on supervised post-degree years.
The guardrails are exact: the hours may be earned only while holding the limited LMSW license, in an agency, health facility, institution or other board-approved entity; no more than 2,080 hours count in any 12-month period; and the weekly average must stay between at least 16 and not more than 40 hours, with a board waiver available if you finish 4,000 hours outside that band.
The rule states no separate direct-client-hour minimum and no total supervision-hour figure β the supervision requirement is stated as hours per month, not a cumulative total.
A new graduate who takes a salaried job should confirm the agency is board-approved before counting a single hour.
For what counts as a supervised hour, and what changes at independent licensure, see associate vs. independently licensed therapists.
βSupervised work experience may only be earned while holding a Michigan limited master's of social work licenseβ
The board adopts exactly three ASWB examinations: the Bachelor's, the Advanced Generalist and the Clinical.
It adopts no ASWB Masters examination, so the exam for a master's license is the Advanced Generalist (macro) or the Clinical (clinical designation), which R 338.2949(1)(c) lists as a requirement alongside the 4,000 hours.
A passing score is defined by ASWB for the level sought, and the board may approve an alternative examination it finds substantially equivalent; the research identified no alternative.
The rules read set no order between the exam and the hours β degree, 4,000 hours and exam sit in one requirements list for the same license β so whether you may sit the exam before, during or after the limited-license years is a question for the board.
For how the counselor, social work and MFT licensing exams compare, see ASWB vs NCE vs NCMHCE vs the MFT national exam.
βThe board approves and adopts the following examinations developed, maintained, and scored by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB): (a) Bachelor's examination. (b) Advanced generalist examination. (c) Clinical examination.β
Your supervisor must be a Michigan-licensed master's social worker who holds the macro designation, the clinical designation, or both, as applicable to the hours you are earning, with a license in good standing throughout the supervision period.
For the clinical designation that means a supervisor who holds the clinical designation β a colleague's clinical caseload or an agency's clinical director title does not substitute.
Supervisory review must run at least 4 hours per month, of which at least 2 must be individual, either in person or by a telecommunications method providing live and simultaneous contact.
The remaining meetings may be a group modality only if half the supervision includes individual contact reviewing your active work functions and records β supervisory review is defined as exactly that review, so a general staff meeting does not count.
The rules name no separate supervisor credential to look for; the license and designation are the check.
Whether you or your employer pays for that supervision is covered in who pays for clinical supervision.
βSupervisory review must be conducted for at least 4 hours per month with at least 2 hours being conducted between the applicant and the supervisor using either of the following methods: (i) Individually and in person. (ii) Individually using a telecommunications method that provides for live and simultaneous contact.β
Master's-level practice is defined to include the application of specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills β assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders, conditions and addictions β with treatment methods running from advanced case management to individual, couple, family and group counseling and psychotherapy, whether in private practice or other settings.
Bachelor's-level practice excludes psychotherapy and other advanced clinical skills, so an LBSW posting cannot include a therapy caseload.
A limited licensee, bachelor's or master's, practices under the supervision of a licensed master's social worker and is confined to an agency, health facility, institution or other board-approved entity β that is the settings rule that shapes a new graduate's first job.
The clinical-designation rule lists the activities the 4,000 hours must include at least one of, from psychotherapy and assessment to case management for complex and high-risk cases and clinical supervision or direction of clinical programs.
βThe application of specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills in the areas of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, conditions, and addictions. Treatment methods include the provision of advanced social work case management and casework and individual, couple, family, or group counseling and psychotherapy whether in private practice or other settings.β
Endorsement has two doors.
The first is a presumption: hold an active master's-level social work license or registration in good standing from another state, or a Canadian province, plus a minimum of 10 years of master's-level practice before applying, and you are presumed to meet the licensure requirements; you choose the macro or clinical designation and attest to master's-level practice as the statute defines it, and can add the second designation later by the extra-hours route or proof you hold both where you are licensed.
The second door is the fallback for everyone else: pass the Advanced Generalist or Clinical examination and document at least 4,000 hours of supervised work experience, work experience, or both, at the macro or clinical level.
Either way you disclose every health-profession license you hold and provide verification from the issuing entity that no disciplinary proceedings are pending.
A clinician relocating short of 10 years should gather hour documentation early, because the fallback tracks Michigan's own 4,000-hour floor.
For how endorsement works when you move, see moving states as a therapist: license transfer and endorsement.
βIf an applicant holds an active master's of social work license or registration in good standing from another state or license in good standing from a province of Canada and has been engaged in the practice of social work at the master's level for a minimum of 10 years before the date of application for Michigan licensure, it is presumed that the applicant meets the requirements for licensure under section 16186 of the code, MCL 333.16186.β
As of September 2026 Michigan is not on the Social Work Licensure Compact commission's list of member jurisdictions: it has not enacted the compact.
There is no multistate-license route into or out of Michigan, so practicing here takes a Michigan license β by the standard route or the endorsement routes above.
The compact itself has reached activation status, but the commission says multistate licenses are not yet being issued anywhere, and it estimates its data system will be complete in spring 2027 rather than giving a launch date.
Check the commission's jurisdiction list and the board before relying on either status, since both move.
For the compactβs status nationally and what it will allow, see the Social Work Licensure Compact.
Renewal runs on a 3-year cycle.
A licensee who has been licensed for the 3-year period immediately preceding the expiration date must accumulate not less than 45 continuing education contact hours approved by the board during the 3 years immediately preceding the renewal application.
The set-asides are specific: at least 5 hours in ethics, at least 2 in pain and symptom management, and at least 2 in human trafficking.
The renewal rule also requires satisfying the implicit-bias training rules, R 338.7001 to R 338.7005, whose text the research did not read β ask the board what documentation those rules require.
Licensees must retain documentation for 5 years from the date of applying for renewal, and filing the renewal application itself certifies compliance, so the record-keeping is not optional.
The statute sets the 45-hour minimum and its ethics portion in the Public Health Code, with the rule filling in the details.
βAt least 5 of the 45 continuing education contact hours in each renewal period must be in ethics.β
The Cornell LII history notes on the saved rules show their current text predates the 2023β2026 window: the examination rule took effect March 31, 2021, and the rest of the saved set β the definitions, degree, limited-license, experience, clinical-designation, endorsement and renewal rules β took effect April 25, 2022, as 2022 MR 8.
No amendment from 2023 through 2026 appears in the notes read, so the 4,000-hour floor, the limited-license mechanics and the exam list are the stable, in-force wording.
The compact status also did not move in the window: Michigan had not enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact as of September 2026.
Read the board's site for anything newer, since the saved rules are a snapshot, not a live register.
Below the licenses sit two registrations.
A registered social service technician needs 1 year of social work experience acceptable to the board, or 2 years of college including human-services coursework, and employment applying social work values, ethics, principles and skills; that employment subdivision is waived for someone with the equivalent of 2,000 hours of service with a board-recognized agency or an associate degree in social work from a board-approved college with supervised field experience.
A limited social service technician needs 2 years of college plus employment or an offer of employment with a recognized agency, and lasts not more than 1 year.
Both registrations are practice-under-supervision credentials, not licenses.
The limited bachelor's social work license mirrors the master's structure at the bachelor's level: a limited license to complete the 2-year postdegree experience, supervised by an LMSW in a board-approved setting, with the statute capping renewal at not more than 6 years.
For a career changer without a BSW, the technician registration is the door the statute actually builds.

Code R 338.2953 β Michigan issues no license titled LCSW.
The letters you held in another state do not transfer as a title: MCL 333.18503(2) reserves "licensed master's social worker", "social worker" and l.m.s.w. for Michigan licensees, and employers and verifications here list the LMSW with its designation.
Search Michigan postings by the designation, and confirm your title use with the Michigan Board of Social Work.
At least 4,000 hours of post-degree social work experience accrued over not less than 2 years (R 338.2953(b)), earned only while you hold the limited LMSW license in a board-approved setting.
Supervisory review must run at least 4 hours per month with at least 2 of them individual; no more than 2,080 hours count in any 12-month period, and the weekly average must be at least 16 but not more than 40 hours (R 338.2949(3)).
The rule states no cumulative supervision-hour total β confirm the current details with the board.
The Bachelor's examination for the LBSW.
For the LMSW, Michigan adopts no ASWB Masters examination at all: the macro designation requires the Advanced Generalist exam and the clinical designation requires the Clinical exam, which the rules list as a requirement alongside the 4,000 supervised hours, with no order stated between them (R 338.2925; R 338.2949(1)).
R 338.2925(3) lets the board approve a substantially equivalent alternative; none is named in the rule text.
Confirm with the Michigan Board of Social Work when you may sit the exam relative to your limited-license hours.
Through endorsement under R 338.2957.
If you hold an active master's-level social work license in good standing elsewhere and have practiced at the master's level for at least 10 years before applying, you are presumed to meet Michigan's requirements; you apply for the macro or clinical designation with an attestation of that practice.
Short of 10 years, you must pass the Advanced Generalist or Clinical exam and document at least 4,000 hours of supervised work experience, work experience, or both, at the macro or clinical level.
Ask the board which designation fits your practice history.
Only if the practice is an entity approved by the board.
R 338.2949(3)(a) says supervised work experience may be earned only while holding the limited LMSW license, and MCL 333.18506 confines a limited licensee to practicing in an agency, health facility, institution, or other entity approved by the board, under the supervision of a licensed master's social worker.
A solo private practice is not automatically an approved setting, and the supervision requirements still apply month by month.
Verify the setting's approval status with the Michigan Board of Social Work before your first counted hour.
