Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 release (retrieved via O*NET, August 2026).
SOC 21-1013 covers marriage and family therapists specifically β the only one of the three therapy licences with an occupation of its own.
This is where the clean national figure stops helping.
Each card is the same occupation in a different state, May 2025, with its median against the $66,940 national median:

Start with what makes this page possible.
There is no BLS occupation called "therapist", the counsellor category pools substance abuse, behavioural disorder and mental health counsellors together, and clinical social workers are split across two occupations.
Marriage and family therapists have an occupation of their own β SOC 21-1013 β so the median above is a real measurement of one licence rather than a blend of several.
Nationally it is also the highest of the three.
The MFT median of $66,940 sits about $7,600 above the counsellor occupation's $59,350 and above both social work categories.
On the strength of that one number, the LMFT looks like the best-paid of the master's-level therapy licences.
Then look at the states, and the conclusion falls apart.
The same licence has a median of $67,300 in California and $46,300 in Texas β a gap of more than $21,000, which is larger than the difference between any two of the three licences nationally.
The national premium over counsellors holds in California, narrows in New York, disappears in Illinois and Florida, and reverses outright in Texas, where counsellors earn well above MFTs.
So the cleanest dataset in this field produces the least portable claim in it: "LMFTs earn more" is true of the country and false in several of its largest states.
The practical reading is that your state matters more for this licence than for the others, and that a national figure is close to useless for a decision about where to work.
Some of the spread is genuine market difference β how a state funds family services, how much of the work is cash-pay couples therapy versus agency-funded family programmes.
Some of it is survey composition.
Distinguishing the two would need per-state employment counts this page does not have, so it is not asserted.
A note on what is not here: Ohio.
Its published MFT table runs from a 25th percentile of $41,840 to a 75th of $146,210, against a national 75th of $93,840.
A distribution that shape almost certainly reflects a small state sample rather than a market anyone could plan around, so it is left out rather than quoted.
Knowing when not to repeat a published figure is part of reading this data honestly.
Two things move pay more than geography does.
Licensure status is the largest: pre-licensure clinicians earn materially less, and the reason is payer credentialing rather than skill β the mechanism is in can an associate bill insurance?
Payer eligibility is the second, and it changed recently: MFTs became able to enrol with Medicare for the first time on 1 January 2024, so guidance written before that date understates the licence's reach.
For the licence itself β the systemic frame, the relational-hours requirement, and the scope question that is quietly changing β see what is an LMFT?
