Board Certified Behavior Analyst Job Description Template

A copy-paste posting for a BCBA β€” written around the three things this role actually turns on: the state licence question, the supervision load, and a pay line you can defend.

BCBA postings fail in a predictable way: they say "BCBA required" without saying whether a state licence stacks on top of the certification, hide a supervision caseload that is itself a certification requirement, and quote a pay median that has no source behind it.

The template below makes each of those decisions explicit, with notes on where your state's rules change the wording.

What to include

The credential line and the licence line are two different requirements β€” put both in the posting.

The BCBA is a graduate-level certification issued by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), a private certification body, not a state licensing board, so "BCBA" and "licensed behavior analyst" are not the same record.

Forty-one US jurisdictions β€” 40 states plus DC β€” regulated behavior analysts through a licence, a certificate or a title registration as of September 2026, and ten states have no behavior-analyst licensure law at all: California, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Maine, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and West Virginia.

(Pennsylvania does have an adjacent Licensed Behavior Specialist credential, but it runs through the State Board of Medicine and does not use the BCBA as its route.)

Where your state licenses, name the state credential and say whether you will wait for an applicant to complete it β€” and write the posting on the premise that certification alone does not authorize practice where a licence is required.

New York's education department states it plainly: "BACB certification alone is not sufficient to practice as an LBA in New York State."

Most licensing states do use the BACB credential as the route, but several statutes never name the BACB β€” Arizona, Louisiana, Massachusetts and New Jersey β€” and Washington's rule is permissive (the secretary "may accept" certification by a national accredited entity in lieu of the specific requirements), so verify with your state's board before you require a licence in the posting.

Colorado is a timing case of its own: its 2026 licensing law does not prohibit unlicensed practice until July 1, 2028.

BACB certification vs. state behavior analyst licensure walks the full map.

Never print a licence title on an unlicensed role β€” and check whether the generic words are protected too.

In Texas, Wisconsin and Montana the protected words are "behavior analyst" itself: Texas, subject to the Subchapter B exemptions, restricts the title to licensees and bars unlicensed practice of applied behavior analysis (Tex.

Occ.

Code Β§ 506.251); Wisconsin bars using the title "behavior analyst" without the state licence (Wis. Stat. Β§ 440.311(1)); Montana bars representing oneself as a behavior analyst without one (MCA 37-17-403(1)).

A posting in those three states that titles the role "behavior analyst" should therefore require the state credential; if you intend to hire a BCBA who will not hold it, clear the titling against the statute's exemptions with the board before you post.

Arkansas's 2025 law protects the title "registered behavior analyst" only β€” it contains no practice ban.

And where your state has no licensure law at all, the credential is the certification: the posting can say Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) β€” not "licensed" anything.

State the supervision load as a number, because it is a certification requirement, not a courtesy.

Since January 1, 2026, every RBT supervisor must hold BCaBA or BCBA certification β€” the noncertified RBT supervisor role is gone β€” and RBT supervision means at least 5 percent of each technician's monthly behavior-analytic service hours, at least two face-to-face contacts a month (at least one of them individual), and the supervisor observing the technician providing services in at least one monthly meeting.

A BCaBA hire needs a qualified supervisor on record with the BACB to practise at all.

If the analyst will supervise fieldwork trainees, the gate is narrower: the supervisor must be an active BCBA with no current disciplinary sanctions who is certified for at least one year and meets the supervision continuing-education requirement, or β€” for a first-year certificant β€” one receiving monthly consultation from a qualified consulting supervisor.

Say how many RBTs, BCaBAs and trainees the role carries.

RBT supervision requirements and BCBA supervised fieldwork cover both rule sets.

The pay line is where BCBA postings go wrong, because there is no honest current benchmark to copy.

Federal labor statistics have no occupation series for behavior analysts, and the BACB publishes no salary data; unsourced aggregator medians circulate widely in this field, and none could be verified against a primary source.

The only named national figure is a dated survey: a 2019 survey of 244 BCBAs and BCBA-Ds (Baires, Boydston & Redner, Behavior and Social Issues, 2023) found a mean annual income of $75,221 for its BCBA respondents β€” pre-pandemic data from a roughly 2 percent response sample, children's clinical settings, a mean annualised from hourly rates, not a median.

If you cite it, date it; better, post the range you actually pay.

One mechanical rule: a position that meets the learned-professional duties test must also be paid on a salary basis of at least $684 a week to be exempt from overtime, under Department of Labor rules restored in May 2026 β€” no DOL ruling names behavior analysts specifically, but a W-2 BCBA paid purely per hour or per authorization unit risks being non-exempt and owed overtime.

The full hiring guide covers the classification questions, including California's contractor test.

Name the setting, the population and who handles authorizations.

Home, school or clinic; ages and diagnoses served; whether the analyst or an office team runs prior authorizations.

Coverage rules drive this field, so say which payers the caseload actually bills β€” who pays for ABA is the orientation.

Calibrate the search to demand: the BACB's analysis of job postings counted 132,307 US postings in 2025 that required or preferred BCBA or BCBA-D certification, up 28 percent from 103,150 in 2024, with California alone accounting for 15 percent β€” against a certificant pool of 85,587 BCBAs as of July 1, 2026.

The template

Replace everything in [brackets].

Keep the state licence line only where your state actually issues one β€” and if you are not requiring the licence, check the title question with your board before you post: in Texas, Wisconsin and Montana the protected words are "behavior analyst" itself, so a posting using that title should require the state credential.

[Practice Name] β€” Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) [+ your state's licence title only if you require the licence β€” e.g., "Licensed Behavior Analyst"; in Texas, Wisconsin and Montana the words "behavior analyst" are themselves restricted to licensees, so a posting using this title should require the state credential]

Location: [City, State] Β· [Clinic / Home-based / School partnership / Hybrid]
Employment type: [Full-time / Part-time] Β· [W-2 / Contract β€” read the pay section above before choosing]
Pay: [State the structure and the range you actually pay]

About the role
[Practice Name] is hiring a Board Certified Behavior Analyst to design and oversee behavior-analytic services for [population β€” e.g., children ages 2–12 with autism]. We require an active BCBA certification in good standing with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, verified before your first day.

[STATE LICENCE β€” keep or delete: We also require [State]'s [exact credential name β€” e.g., Licensed Behavior Analyst] licence; BCBA certification alone does not authorize practice in [State].]

[BCaBA / TRAINEES β€” keep or delete: We welcome [BCaBAs / BCBA fieldwork trainees]. Supervision is provided by [name and credential] and meets the BACB's supervisor requirements.]

What you'll do
- Conduct behavior assessments and design, implement and revise behavior-analytic treatment plans
- Supervise [number] Registered Behavior Technicians delivering those plans, including the required monthly supervision: at least 5 percent of each technician's service hours, two face-to-face contacts (at least one individual), and at least one observed session
- [Supervise a BCaBA and/or fieldwork trainees, if you hold the BACB's supervisor qualifications]
- [Caregiver and school-team training, if the role includes it]
- Complete session notes, progress reporting and prior-authorization support in [EHR] within [timeframe]
- Coordinate with [schools / physicians / speech and occupational therapy providers]

What you'll need
- An active BCBA certification with the BACB (a BCBA-D meets the same requirement β€” it is the same certification, not a senior tier)
- [Your state's licence, certificate or registration, by its exact name, if your state issues one]
- [State jurisprudence exam, if your board requires one β€” Louisiana and Nevada do]
- [The population, setting or supervisory experience you actually require β€” leave out nice-to-haves]

Pay and benefits
- [Range and structure β€” salary, or salary plus productivity]
- [How cancelled sessions, no-shows and documentation time are paid]
- [Health insurance, retirement, paid time off, and a CE allowance β€” certificants need 32 CEUs per two-year cycle, including 4 in ethics; supervisors also need 3 in supervision, rising to 4 on January 1, 2027, so covering the supervision CEUs is a concrete perk for a role that supervises]

Schedule
[Days and hours; travel between client homes, if any; evening or weekend availability]

To apply
[How to apply]. [Practice Name] is an equal opportunity employer.

After you post

Verify two records, and record that you did.

Certification status is confirmed with the BACB, not with a certificate copy in a candidate's file; where your state regulates the profession, the licence, certificate or registration is a separate record held by a separate board.

Check both before the offer is final, and note what was checked, who checked it, when, and the result.

If the role touches federally funded programs, search the OIG exclusion list too β€” see hiring compliance: license verification and exclusion checks.

The technician layer has its own state paperwork.

Five states register or certify behavior technicians directly β€” Louisiana (registered line technician), Mississippi (an RBT must be registered with the Mississippi Autism Board under the supervising licensee), Nevada (registered behavior technician), Oregon (registered behavior analysis interventionist) and Washington (certified behavior technician) β€” so technician registration is a hire-day task in those states, not an afterthought.

Colorado adds a payment rule: statute requires Medicaid-paid behavior technicians to hold a certification from a certifying entity, with a temporary uncertified period of at least 45 days while the technician pursues certification, subject to federal approval.

In most licensing states technicians are exempt as supervised staff β€” verify your state's rule rather than assuming it.

Be careful with 1099.

In California, a contractor engagement is judged under the ABC test, whose profession carve-outs cover physicians, dentists, podiatrists, psychologists and veterinarians β€” not behavior analysts β€” and a practice whose core business is behavior analysis will struggle to show a contractor BCBA works outside the usual course of that business.

Other states apply their own tests, which were not surveyed here; when in doubt, post the role as W-2.
