What to Look for When Hiring a Registered Behavior Technician
Decide what you are hiring an RBT to do before you write the posting.
A Registered Behavior Technician is a paraprofessional certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) — a private certification body, not a state board — who delivers behavior-analytic services under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor.
Assessment and treatment design stay with the BCBA; the RBT implements the plan.
The pool is large — 260,174 RBTs held certification as of July 1, 2026 — but the credential alone doesn't tell you about setting fit or reliability.
Our RBT career guide covers the role from the job-seeker's side.
Then decide whether you require certification on day one or sponsor trainees.
Since January 1, 2026, BACB certification requires being at least 18, a high-school-level education or the equivalent, criminal background and abuse-registry checks, a 40-hour training, an Initial Competency Assessment and the certification exam.
If you sponsor trainees, know the commitment: the training must be completed in no less than 5 and no more than 180 days, the BACB itself provides and recommends no training, and trainers must be active BCBAs or BCaBAs who hold 8-hour supervision training.
How to become an RBT walks the full path, and we break down the 40-hour training and competency assessment separately.
Check your state's layer early.
Five states run their own technician registration or certification — Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, Oregon and Washington — so the BACB credential alone is not always permission to work.
Elsewhere, state statutes and program rules can still bind, such as Michigan's requirement that behavior technicians complete training based on the BACB's RBT task list.
Details in the verification checklist below.
Beyond the credential, screen for your caseload.
The ages and diagnoses you serve; the setting — schools, clinics and family homes behave like different jobs (see schools vs. clinic vs. home); schedule reliability; and tolerance for documentation and travel between sessions.
Plan around supervisor capacity too: 132,307 US job postings in 2025 required or preferred BCBA or BCBA-D certification, up 28% from 2024 (Lightcast data published by the BACB) — budget supervisor capacity alongside the hires themselves.
Our BCBA guide covers the supervising credential.

Verify certification at the BACB's registry, not from a certificate PDF.
The online BACB Certificant Registry is the primary resource for checking certification status and reportable disciplinary actions, and the BACB updates it daily; written verification letters cost $25 and are emailed within 3–5 business days if you need one for the file.
If your organization is Joint Commission accredited, primary source verification is the organization's responsibility, not the clinician's — the Joint Commission states that simply presenting a copy of a license in lieu of evidence that verification was complete does not meet the intent of the requirement.
That is an accreditation standard, not a law, but the habit is sound either way: record the date, who checked, what was checked and the result.
- Certification status and discipline. The registry shows active status and any reportable disciplinary actions. The conduct baseline is the RBT Ethics Code (2.0) — 29 standards in force since January 1, 2022; see RBT renewal and the ethics code.
- State registration, where it exists. Five states run their own technician credential. Louisiana registers line technicians through the supervising licensed behavior analyst (at least 18, a high-school diploma or equivalent, criminal background report). Mississippi requires registration with the Mississippi Autism Board within 7 days of employment and/or BACB certification. Nevada requires state registration before any services are provided — practising unregistered is a gross misdemeanor, the registration fee is $70, and all Nevada ABA licenses and registrations currently expire December 31, 2026. Oregon registers behavior analysis interventionists (40 hours of training, fingerprints, age 18+, supervision). Washington certifies behavior technicians and accepts the national RBT credential in lieu of its own 40-hour program (WAC 246-805-300(4)(a)). In the other 46 of 51 jurisdictions there is no technician licence or registration requirement as of the BACB's September 2026 licensure map — but a state with no registration can still attach licensure-law conditions. Hawaii is the example: its technician exemption applies only to implementers holding the BACB RBT credential and working under the direction of a licensed behavior analyst or licensed psychologist (HRS §465D-7(a)(4)), outside its separate psychologist, teacher, caregiver and Medicaid-waiver exemptions. Payer and program rules can also bind, as Michigan's and Colorado's rules below show.
- Background and abuse-registry checks. The BACB's own floor: a criminal background check and an abuse registry check completed no more than 180 days before the candidate pays the certification application fee, each comparable to what home health aides, child care professionals and teachers undergo in your community. The BACB does not require fingerprinting — states and organizations may, and Oregon's registration does — and where no abuse registry exists the applicant may report "Unavailable" on the attestation form. Your separate pre-employment check is your own obligation, run under the FCRA rules below.
- Federal exclusion screening. Where an RBT's work is billed to Medicaid or another federal health care program, the federal ban on employing excluded individuals is the risk that matters. No statute or regulation requires you to check the OIG's LEIE — but employing an excluded person for federal-program work is prohibited (42 CFR 1001.1901(b)(1)), the OIG recommends checking before hire and monthly, and the penalty for employing an excluded person runs up to $25,595 per item or service (the 2025 inflation-adjusted figure; $20,000 statutory since February 9, 2018) plus an assessment of up to three times the amounts claimed or the person's total employment costs. The ban reaches non-clinical staff and volunteers too. Our hiring compliance guide has the full sequence.
- If you use a background-screening company, mind the FCRA and EEOC layer. That means a stand-alone disclosure and the candidate's written authorization before the check, a pre-adverse-action notice with a copy of the report and the Summary of Rights, and a final adverse-action notice. Federal law sets no seven-year cutoff on reporting convictions (arrests that did not lead to conviction do have one), and the EEOC's 2012 guidance directs employers to weigh convictions individually rather than screening them out automatically. That guidance remained posted as of the research date, though an April 2025 executive order directed agencies to deprioritize disparate-impact enforcement under Title VII — check the current posture before building policy on either assumption.
What to Pay: Registered Behavior Technician Salary Benchmarks
There is no citable national wage figure for RBTs, and knowing why will save you a bad budget.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has no RBT occupation, so any "BLS salary" attached to RBT job ads comes from a different, broader occupation and is not RBT pay.
The BACB publishes certificant counts and demand data, not wages.
Set your range from your own local market.
The data that does exist is about why RBTs quit.
In the BACB's exit survey of people whose RBT certification expired in 2024 (30,018 surveyed; 1,386 respondents, a 4.6% response rate), 57% cited inadequate pay, 44% poor treatment by their company, 42% concerning issues in the workplace, and 34% unpredictable pay.
The survey reports the share of respondents citing each reason; it does not rank them.
More than a third cited unpredictable pay — a reason separate from the rate itself — and hour guarantees plus clear cancellation-pay rules speak to it directly.
Classify the role as non-exempt.
The RBT entry path requires no degree, so the role cannot meet the learned-professional exemption's advanced-knowledge test — and even bachelor's-level behavioral roles are the at-risk group for that test (Solis v.
Washington found a broadly-satisfiable degree requirement insufficiently specialized).
Pay hourly or salary-non-exempt, budget overtime past 40 hours, and pay for all hours worked.
The certification costs you might reimburse are modest and fixed: a $65 application processing fee paid to the BACB and a $45 exam appointment paid to Pearson VUE.
Writing the Job Description
Name the credential requirement exactly.
"Current RBT certification in good standing (verified through the BACB registry)" is a checkable requirement; "RBT preferred" invites trainee applications you may not be equipped to supervise through certification.
If you do sponsor trainees, say so, say what you pay for — training time, the $65 application fee, the $45 exam — and by when certification must be complete.
State the supervision structure, because candidates ask.
Since January 1, 2026, an RBT Supervisor must hold BCaBA or BCBA certification — the BACB eliminated the noncertified supervisor role.
Say who supervises, that supervision runs at least 5% of monthly service hours with two live contacts, and whether supervision time is paid.
If you cannot yet offer BCBA or BCaBA supervision, that is a staffing-model problem to solve before the posting, not after; see RBT supervision requirements.
Be exact about the caseload.
Ages and diagnoses; the setting or settings; travel between homes and schools; the schedule, including any evening or weekend sessions; whether hours are guaranteed or billed-only; and how cancellations affect pay.
The same title covers a clinic-based toddler caseload and a solo school-shadow shift, so say which one you mean.
Onboarding Your New Registered Behavior Technician
Before the first client session: record the registry verification; confirm state registration where you operate (Mississippi's rules give the supervising licensee 7 days from employment and/or certification; Nevada requires registration before services); and build the supervision calendar.
The BACB minimums are 5% of the RBT's monthly service hours in supervision, at least two face-to-face, real-time contacts per month (phone and email do not count), supervisor observation of services in at least one meeting, and at least one individual meeting — the other may be a small group of 2–10 RBTs.
Supervision and professional development are separate requirements; one event cannot cover both.
Details in RBT supervision requirements.
Build in-service training into the calendar — it doubles as their recertification path.
Recertification moved from a 1-year to a 2-year cycle in 2026, with 12 professional development units (PDUs) per cycle, and in-service training provided by the employing organization is an eligible PDU source, alongside ACE-provider events and behavior-analytic university coursework.
RBTs recertifying in 2028 are the first cohort under the PDU system.
See RBT renewal and the ethics code.
Make documentation a day-one habit: supervision logs per contact; exclusion-screen records (date, names searched, result) re-run monthly; background and abuse-registry attestation dates; and state registration confirmations.
The Joint Commission's documentation expectation — date, who, what, result — is a good default even where accreditation does not apply to you.
Walk the ethics code in week one.
The RBT Ethics Code (2.0) has been the conduct baseline since January 1, 2022 — 29 standards covering boundaries, confidentiality, documentation and reporting.
Translate the ones that touch your operations into concrete expectations: who reports incidents to whom, how session-note corrections are handled, what to do when a family asks for something outside the plan.
