Registered Behavior Technician Job Description Template

A copy-paste posting for a BACB-certified paraprofessional, built around the decisions that change the hire: the credential and your state's registration layer, the supervision you commit to, the caseload detail, and a pay structure that answers why RBTs leave.

An RBT job description fails in a predictable way: it says "RBT" without saying who supervises, hides whether hours are guaranteed, and never mentions the state registration some states stack on top of the BACB credential.

The template below names the credential exactly, states the supervision you are committing to, and puts pay predictability on the table β€” inadequate pay tops the reasons departing RBTs give in the BACB's own exit survey, and about a third cite unpredictable pay.

What to include

The credential, stated as something you can check.

"Current BACB RBT certification in good standing" is a checkable requirement; "RBT preferred" invites trainee applications you may not be equipped to carry through certification.

The Registered Behavior Technician credential is a paraprofessional certification issued by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board β€” a private certification body, not a state licensing board β€” and the BACB describes the role as assisting in delivering behavior-analytic services under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor.

The pool is real: 260,174 RBTs held certification as of July 1, 2026.

Verify each candidate at the BACB's online registry, which the BACB updates daily, rather than from a certificate PDF.

If you sponsor trainees instead, the 2026 path is specific: at least 18 years old, a high-school-level education or the equivalent, criminal background and abuse registry checks completed no more than 180 days before the application fee is paid, a 40-hour training completed in no less than 5 and no more than 180 days, an Initial Competency Assessment within 90 days before the application, then a 90-minute exam of 85 multiple-choice questions (75 scored).

One warning for 2026 hiring: training completed under the previous requirements does not carry over β€” the BACB's transition guidance says those candidates "will need to complete the full training again."

How to become an RBT and the 40-hour training and competency assessment carry the details.

The supervision you are committing to β€” name it in the posting.

Since January 1, 2026, an RBT Supervisor must hold BCaBA or BCBA certification; the BACB eliminated the noncertified supervisor role.

The BACB requires RBTs to obtain ongoing supervision of at least 5% of the hours they spend providing behavior-analytic services each calendar month, with at least two face-to-face, real-time contacts per month (phone and email do not count), supervisor observation of services in at least one meeting, and at least one individual meeting β€” the other may be a small group of two to ten RBTs.

This is a certification requirement, not an employment statute, but your RBT cannot keep the certification without it, so schedule it like an operating requirement: say who supervises, whether supervision time is paid, and how you cover absences.

Supervisor capacity is the constraint to plan for β€” 132,307 US job postings in 2025 required or preferred BCBA or BCBA-D certification, up 28% from 2024 (Lightcast data published by the BACB), while 85,587 BCBAs and 5,246 BCaBAs held certification as of July 1, 2026.

RBT supervision requirements has the mechanics.

Your state's layer on top of the credential.

In four states the state credential is a requirement, so the BACB certification alone is not permission to work.

Louisiana registers line technicians through the supervising licensed behavior analyst (at least 18, a high-school diploma or equivalent, a criminal background report).

Mississippi requires registration with the Mississippi Autism Board within 7 days of employment and/or BACB certification β€” a deadline in the board's 2025 rule revision, whose final status was not confirmed in what we reviewed, so verify it is in force with the board β€” and the application is filed by the supervising licensee.

Nevada requires state registration before any services are provided; practicing unregistered is a gross misdemeanor there, the registration fee is $70, and all Nevada ABA licenses and registrations currently expire December 31, 2026.

Washington certifies behavior technicians β€” practicing as one without the certification is barred β€” and accepts the national RBT credential in lieu of its own 40-hour program, verified directly from the credentialing entity.

Oregon offers a registration for behavior analysis interventionists (high-school diploma, age 18+, a fingerprint check, 40 hours of approved training, ongoing supervision, provisional registration issued within 5 business days), but Oregon's law as we reviewed it contains no general prohibition on unlicensed practice β€” confirm with the Behavior Analysis Regulatory Board whether your role must register.

Where there is no registration, there can still be conditions.

States that license behavior analysts generally exempt supervised technicians β€” in our review of state law as of September 2026, 46 of the 51 jurisdictions have no state technician licence or registration at all β€” but read the exemption before you post.

Michigan requires behavior technicians to complete training based on the BACB's RBT task list and bars them from words or titles indicating behavior analyst.

Texas conditions its technician exemption on two things (Tex.

Occ.

Code Β§ 506.054): the services must be delivered under the extended authority and direction of a licensed behavior analyst or licensed assistant behavior analyst, and the person must be designated as an "applied behavior analysis technician," "behavior technician," "tutor" or "front-line therapist" β€” a closed statutory list with no "such as," so the designation in the posting does real legal work there.

Nebraska requires a nonprofessional-status title and bars technicians from designing assessment or intervention plans.

Hawaii's technician exemption applies only to implementers holding the BACB RBT credential and working under the direction of a licensed behavior analyst or licensed psychologist β€” an uncredentialed trainee outside its other exemptions is not covered.

Colorado's Medicaid program pays for services provided by certified technicians and β€” subject to federal approval, which was not confirmed in what we reviewed β€” will also pay for an uncertified technician during one temporary period of at least 45 days while the technician pursues certification.

Several states require a title that signals nonprofessional status (Arizona's exemption names "ABA technician," "behavior technician" or "tutor"; Colorado requires it but lets a technician use the title of a credential they actually hold, such as registered behavior technician).

Ten jurisdictions β€” including California, Florida and Pennsylvania β€” have no behavior-analyst licensure law at all.

These are state rules, not a national pattern; check yours before the posting goes live.

The caseload, in concrete detail.

The same certification covers a clinic-based early-intervention caseload, a school shadow, and solo in-home sessions β€” they are different jobs.

Write the ages and diagnoses served, the setting or settings, the travel between them, the schedule including evening and weekend sessions, and the documentation expected per session.

Then the two lines RBT candidates read closest: whether hours are guaranteed or billable-only, and how cancellations are paid.

Schools vs. clinic vs. home explains how much the setting changes the work.

Keep the conduct baseline for onboarding rather than the posting: the RBT Ethics Code (2.0) β€” 29 standards in force since January 1, 2022 β€” covers boundaries, confidentiality, documentation and reporting; RBT renewal and the ethics code summarizes it.

Plan for the credential ladder.

Certificants may hold only one BACB certification at a time β€” when your RBT earns the BCaBA, their RBT certification expires after 180 days.

If you encourage the ladder, and the RBT-to-BCaBA-to-BCBA path is how most supervisors are made, plan coverage for the switch, and note that RBT work does not automatically double as supervisor fieldwork: the BACB cautions that many tasks completed as part of RBT and RBT ongoing supervision requirements may not count toward BCBA fieldwork.

The pay model β€” honest about what the data can and cannot tell you.

No citable national wage figure exists for RBTs: the Bureau of Labor Statistics has no RBT occupation, so any "BLS salary" attached to an RBT ad describes a different, broader job, and the BACB publishes certificant counts and demand data, not wages.

Set the range from your own local market, and treat the role as non-exempt β€” hourly or salaried non-exempt, with overtime past 40 hours; the RBT entry path requires no degree, so the role does not meet the learned-professional exemption's advanced-knowledge test.

What the published data does tell you is why RBTs leave.

In the BACB's exit survey of people whose RBT certification expired in 2024 (30,018 surveyed, 1,386 respondents β€” a 4.6% response rate), 57% cited inadequate pay, 44% poor treatment by their company, 42% concerning issues in the workplace, and 34% unpredictable pay; the survey reports the share of respondents citing each reason, not a ranking.

Guaranteed-hours options and a written cancellation-pay rule are the direct answers to the unpredictability half of that; the rates themselves are yours to set.

Replace everything in [brackets].

Keep the state-registration line if you operate in Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada or Washington, and delete it elsewhere β€” in Oregon, the state offers a registration for behavior analysis interventionists and protects that title, but its law as we reviewed it has no general practice prohibition, so confirm with the Behavior Analysis Regulatory Board whether your role must register.

In Texas, designate the role in the heading with one of the four statutory titles β€” e.g. "Behavior Technician (RBT)" β€” because the state's technician exemption requires it (see below).

Keep the trainee-track block only if you will actually sponsor candidates through the 2026 requirements β€” training time, assessment and fees included.

After you post

Verify at the source, and record what you found.

Check the certification on the BACB's Certificant Registry and record the date, who checked, what was checked and the result β€” the habit behind the Joint Commission's primary-source-verification requirement, which is an accreditation standard rather than a law but serves you either way; written verification letters cost $25 and arrive within 3–5 business days if you need one for the file.

Where your state's technician credential is a requirement β€” Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada and Washington β€” complete the state step before the first session.

In Mississippi, registration must be filed by the supervising licensee within 7 days of employment and/or certification under the board's 2025 rule revision (confirm the revision is in force); Nevada requires registration before any services are provided.

Oregon registers behavior analysis interventionists and issues provisional registrations within 5 business days, but its law as we reviewed it contains no general practice prohibition β€” confirm with the Behavior Analysis Regulatory Board whether your role must register.

See hiring compliance: license verification and exclusion checks.

Run your own checks; the candidate's BACB checks are not yours.

The criminal background and abuse-registry checks behind the certification were completed up to 180 days before the candidate paid their application fee, to the BACB's standard β€” and fingerprinting is not BACB-required, though states and organizations may require it (Oregon's registration does).

Your pre-employment check is a separate obligation, run under the FCRA: a stand-alone disclosure and the candidate's written authorization first, then, if anything in the report concerns you, a pre-adverse-action notice with the report and the Summary of Rights before any final notice.

Weigh convictions individually rather than screening them out automatically, per the EEOC's 2012 guidance (which remained posted as of the research date; an April 2025 executive order directed agencies to deprioritize disparate-impact enforcement under Title VII β€” check the current posture before building policy on either assumption).

And if the work is billed to Medicaid or another federal health care program, screen the OIG's LEIE exclusion list: no statute requires the check, but employing an excluded person in federally paid care is prohibited, the OIG recommends checking before hire and monthly, and the penalty runs up to $25,595 per item or service (the 2025 inflation-adjusted figure).

Calendar the certification dates you now own.

The Initial Competency Assessment must fall within 90 days before the application; the exam appointment is booked through Pearson VUE ($45, on top of the $65 BACB application fee).

Recertification is now a 2-year cycle with 12 professional development units β€” RBTs recertifying in 2026 use the recertification competency assessment, and the first cohort renewing on PDUs alone lands in 2028.

In-service training your organization provides is an eligible PDU source, alongside ACE-provider events and behavior-analytic university coursework with a grade of C or better, so the training calendar you build for your team doubles as their recertification path.

In Nevada, note the current December 31, 2026 expiry of all ABA licenses and registrations.

Keep the job title honest to what the credential is.

"Registered" in RBT is the BACB's registration, not a state licence β€” except where the state runs its own technician credential, which is a separate step from the BACB one.

And never advertise the role as a behavior-analyst position: Texas protects the title "behavior analyst" itself by statute (Occupations Code Β§ 506.251(c)), and Texas's technician exemption separately requires a designation from a closed list β€” "applied behavior analysis technician," "behavior technician," "tutor" or "front-line therapist" (Occupations Code Β§ 506.054); whether "Registered Behavior Technician" satisfies that list is not addressed in what we reviewed, so designate with one of the four statutory titles.

Michigan bars technicians from words, titles or letters indicating behavior analyst, and several states require supervised technicians to carry a title that signals nonprofessional status β€” Colorado requires it but lets a technician use the title of a credential they actually hold, such as registered behavior technician.

In Arkansas, "registered behavior analyst" is a protected title under the state's 2025 registration act; an RBT is not one.

Where the supervising BCBA needs a state licence on top of certification, see BCBA vs. licensed behavior analyst.

This page is career and hiring information, not legal or clinical advice, and it is not for someone seeking treatment β€” confirm certification requirements with the BACB, state registration rules with your state's board, and screening obligations with your attorney.
