Therapist Salary in New Jersey: Counselors, MFTs and Social Workers

Founder, BehavioralHires
Data: BLS OEWS May 2025

BLS publishes no wage figure for therapists as such β€” it publishes three occupations, and in New Jersey all three sit above their national medians.

Counselors, a combined occupation that also counts substance abuse counselors, had a median of $62,820, 6% above their national median.

Marriage and family therapists had a median of $92,150, 38% above their national median.

Mental health and substance abuse social workers had a median of $66,590, 10% above their national median.

The national ordering holds; the size of the family therapist lead does not.

Why three figures, not one

BLS publishes no occupation called β€œtherapist.” The title is filled by licences counted in separate occupations, so this page shows each one against its own national median and never averages them. None of the three is a figure for one licence alone.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS), May 2025 state and national estimates β€” New Jersey, SOCs 21-1018, 21-1013, 21-1023.

Retrieved 2026-09-24 from the BLS Public Data API.

How to read these figures

These figures are U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates for three whole occupations across every employer in the state, from the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release. They are not listings on this site and not a quote for any particular job, and none of them is a figure for one licence alone. A percentile is a position in the state's wage distribution, not a pay step or an experience level, so check current postings and ask each employer how its pay is structured.

New Jersey vs. the national figures, occupation by occupation

Each occupation is compared with its own national median from the same May 2025 release (national pages for counselors, marriage and family therapists, and social workers), and the national therapist salary page explains why the figures are never blended.

Ranks count only the jurisdictions (states plus DC) where BLS publishes that occupation’s figure.

OccupationNJ medianNationalDiff.Rank by median

MH & substance abuse social workers (21-1023)$66,590$60,280+10%10th of 51

Differences are whole percentages of the national figure, rounded half away from zero, computed from the figures shown.

By estimated employment, New Jersey ranks 12th of 50 for counselors (combined), 3rd of 40 for marriage and family therapists, 16th of 50 for mental health and substance abuse social workers.

Three medians, all above national, none by the same amount

Set against their own national figures, the three New Jersey medians move in one direction but not by one amount.

The counselor median of $62,820 is $3,470 above the national $59,350; the social worker median of $66,590 is $6,310 above the national $60,280; and the family therapist median of $92,150 is $25,210 above the national $66,940.

The ordering matches the national one β€” family therapists highest, social workers next, counselors last β€” but every gap between the three is wider here.

Nationally the family therapist median leads the counselor median by $7,590, or 13%; in New Jersey the lead is $29,330, or 47%, and the lead over social workers is $25,560 against $6,660 nationally.

No single figure would show how far apart the three sit.

Counselors: above national at every percentile

New Jersey counselors sit above the national distribution at every published point, and the premium is steady rather than edge-loaded.

The 10th percentile of $40,630 is 4% above the national figure, the 25th of $49,290 is 5% above, the median of $62,820 is 6% above, and the 75th of $81,900 and the 90th of $104,310 are each 7% above.

The spread is close to the national spread: the middle half spans $32,610 against $29,430 nationally, and the 10th-to-90th span is $63,680 against $58,650.

New Jersey ranks 13th of the 51 jurisdictions that publish a median for this occupation.

For someone weighing a counselor offer, the state median is a higher benchmark than the national one at every rung of the distribution.

This is a combined occupation, so the figures describe every kind of counselor it pools, not one licence.

What this figure covers: A COMBINED occupation: BLS publishes no wage series for licensed mental health counselors (LPC, LMHC, LPCC, LCPC) alone, so this figure pools them with substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors.

Nobody can tell from this release which way the blend pulls the figure.

Family therapists: far above national, capped at the top

Marriage and family therapists are the outlier of the three.

The median of $92,150 is 38% above the national median of $66,940, and New Jersey ranks 2nd of the 45 jurisdictions that publish a median for this occupation; BLS estimates 4,040 employed here, 3rd of the 40 that publish an employment estimate.

The lift runs from the floor up: the 10th percentile of $62,150 is 39% above the national figure, the 25th of $74,070 is 48% above, and the 75th of $101,090 is 8% above.

The ceiling breaks the pattern: the 90th percentile of $110,990 is 10% below the national figure of $123,730, and the top of the distribution is compressed, with $9,900 between the 75th and 90th percentiles against $29,890 nationally.

The hourly median is $44.30 against $32.18 nationally.

OEWS does not say why the top decile trails, and this page does not guess.

Social workers: a lifted middle, a national-level ceiling

Mental health and substance abuse social workers in New Jersey have a median of $66,590, 10% above the national median of $60,280.

The floor is tight and the climb out of it is steep: $2,430 separates the 10th percentile of $45,180 from the 25th of $47,610, against $7,330 nationally, and the move from the 25th percentile to the median is $18,980.

The 10th percentile is 14% above its national figure, while the 25th is only 1% above.

The 75th percentile of $84,700 is 6% above the national figure, and the 90th of $102,130 sits 2% below the national $104,170.

The middle half spans $37,090 against $32,660 nationally.

BLS estimates 2,420 employed in New Jersey, 16th of the 50 jurisdictions that publish an employment estimate for this occupation.

What this figure covers: Clinical social workers (LCSWs) are counted either here or in SOC 21-1022, healthcare social workers, depending on the setting of the job.

This page shows 21-1023 only, so it does not describe every LCSW.

Reading a New Jersey offer against the right row

Start with the occupation the job would be counted in, and read the offer against that row.

The New Jersey hourly medians are $30.20 for counselors, $44.30 for marriage and family therapists and $32.02 for mental health and substance abuse social workers, against national hourly medians of $28.53, $32.18 and $28.98.

A counselor offer at the state median of $62,820 is 6% above the national counselor median of $59,350; a family therapist offer at $92,150 is $25,210 above its national median; and the social worker median of $66,590 is $6,310 above its national figure.

The same salary can sit at very different positions in the three distributions, which is why this page keeps the rows separate.

A percentile is a position in the state distribution, not a pay step, so an offer at the 25th percentile says where it sits among New Jersey jobs in that occupation, not a judgement about the person hired.

Which New Jersey licences these figures do and don't describe

None of the three rows is a licence figure.

The counselor row pools LPCs and LACs with substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors, and BLS publishes no LPC-only or LAC-only median for New Jersey.

The family therapist row is the closest to a single licence, an occupation of its own for marriage and family therapists, whom New Jersey licenses as the LMFT with an LAMFT associate tier, but OEWS does not split it by licence stage, so it cannot say what an LAMFT earns.

Clinical social workers holding the LCSW are counted either in this social worker row or in healthcare social work, depending on the setting, so the $66,590 median does not describe every LCSW.

What each licence requires in New Jersey is summarized in counselor licensure in New Jersey, social work licensure in New Jersey, and MFT licensure in New Jersey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the median therapist salary in New Jersey?

There is no single figure, because BLS publishes no occupation called therapist.

For May 2025 it publishes three New Jersey medians: $62,820 for counselors (a combined occupation that also counts substance abuse counselors), $92,150 for marriage and family therapists and $66,590 for mental health and substance abuse social workers.

All three are above their national medians.

Use the row for the occupation the job would be counted in.

Do marriage and family therapists or counselors earn more in New Jersey?

Marriage and family therapists, and by a wide margin: the New Jersey medians are $92,150 against $62,820 for counselors, a lead of $29,330.

That is a 47% lead at the median, against 13% nationally, where the family therapist median of $66,940 leads the counselor median of $59,350 by $7,590.

The gap is not even across the distributions: it widens from $21,520 at the 10th percentiles to $29,330 at the median, then narrows to $6,680 at the 90th, so it is concentrated in the middle rather than at the ceiling.

What do the top 10% earn in each of the three occupations in New Jersey?

The New Jersey 90th percentile is $104,310 for counselors, $110,990 for marriage and family therapists and $102,130 for mental health and substance abuse social workers.

One in ten workers in each occupation earned more than those figures.

The counselor figure is 7% above its national counterpart, while the family therapist and social worker figures are 10% and 2% below theirs β€” the family therapist ceiling is the one place a New Jersey distribution falls well under its national counterpart.

How many counselors, family therapists and social workers work in New Jersey?

BLS estimates 14,210 counselors in the combined occupation, 4,040 marriage and family therapists and 2,420 mental health and substance abuse social workers employed in New Jersey.

Those are headcounts of people in jobs during the survey period, not open positions.

By employment, New Jersey ranks 12th of 50 jurisdictions for counselors, 3rd of 40 for family therapists and 16th of 50 for social workers, counting only those where BLS publishes an employment estimate.
