LMFT Licensure in Alabama: Requirements, Hours and Exams

Founder, BehavioralHires
Last verified September 2026

Alabama licenses marriage and family therapists through the Alabama Board of Examiners in Marriage and Family Therapy, a separate MFT-only board.

The ladder runs from MFT Intern (a designation, up to 4 years) to Licensed MFT Associate (LAMFTA, up to 5 years) to LMFT.

After a 48-semester-hour degree, the internship needs 500 direct client hours and 100 supervision hours; the post-degree stage needs two years, 1,000 direct client hours and 200 supervision hours.

LMFTs licensed in any other US state are automatically eligible for endorsement.

Verify before you rely on this

Licensing rules change by statute and board rule, and this page is career information, not legal advice. Confirm every requirement with the state board before you apply, register for an exam or count supervised hours. In Alabama, that is the Alabama Board of Examiners in Marriage and Family Therapy.

At a glance

Marriage and Family Therapy Intern, a Board designation for students and unfinished graduates (maximum 4 years), then Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associate (LAMFTA), a license for graduates completing the two-year postgraduate supervision requirement (maximum 5 years).

Regulator

Alabama Board of Examiners in Marriage and Family Therapy, a separate MFT-only board; its rules are chapter 536-X of the Alabama Administrative Code.

Degree

A master's in marriage and family therapy of at least 48 graduate semester hours or 72 graduate quarter hours at a regionally accredited college or university, from a COAMFTE or CACREP Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling accredited program or the content equivalent of either (r.

The 500-hour internship may fall during or after the degree.

Exams

The marriage and family therapy examination approved by the Board (r.

536-X-2-.02(4)); the AMFTRB survey identifies it as the AMFTRB Examination in Marital and Family Therapy.

No state jurisprudence exam appears in the rules read.

Endorsement

An LMFT licensed in any other US state is automatically eligible for endorsement after verification of moral character, licensure, no disciplinary actions, and a 3-credit-semester (or 4-credit-quarter) course in mental health diagnosis (r.

536-X-2-.03(5)).

There is no MFT compact.

Renewal & CE

Every 24 months: LMFTs 40 contact hours (10 clinical MFT workshops, 6 diagnosis and treatment, 6 professional issues and ethics; supervisors add 5 in supervision), Associates 20, Interns 10.

Distance learning must be synchronous (r.

536-X-6-.01).

The Alabama credential ladder

  1. Marriage and Family Therapy Intern(MFT Intern)Pre-licensure

A Board designation, not a license, for a person enrolled in a qualifying program who has yet to graduate or who has yet to complete one, practicing under an approved supervisor for a maximum of four (4) years at one supervision hour per five hours of face-to-face therapy.

  2. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associate(LAMFTA)Pre-licensure

A license, adopted in 2023, for a graduate of a qualifying degree practicing marriage and family therapy under a Board-approved supervisory arrangement to complete the minimum two-year postgraduate supervision requirement; it can be held for a maximum of five (5) years.

  3. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist(LMFT)Independent

The independent license to practice marriage and family therapy in Alabama, requiring the qualifying degree, the internship, two years of post-degree supervised experience, and the marriage and family therapy examination approved by the Board.

  4. LMFT Supervisor CandidateSupervisor

An LMFT preparing to supervise under Board-approved supervision of supervision, with at least 15 contact hours of a supervision course or workshops and candidate contracts valid a maximum of three (3) years.

  5. LMFT Approved SupervisorSupervisor

An LMFT who has met the Board's requirements to provide MFT supervision; the rule states AAMFT Approved Supervisors and AAMFT Approved Supervisor Candidates meet the requirements for Alabama MFT Approved Supervisors.

  6. LMFT Supervisor MentorSupervisor

An LMFT Approved Supervisor qualified to supervise Supervisor Candidates; the rule's experience line prints conflicting words and digits ("one hundred twenty (1200) hours"), so confirm the figure with the board.

MFT Intern, licensed MFT Associate (LAMFTA), then LMFT

πŸ“œ Ala. Admin. Code r. 536-X-2-.01; 536-X-2-.04; 536-X-3-.01; 536-X-4-.01

Alabama issues three rungs plus separate supervision designations.

MFT Intern is a Board designation, not a license, for a person enrolled in a qualifying program who has yet to graduate, or who has yet to complete one, practicing under an approved supervisor; it lasts at most four (4) years, renews on a two-year cycle, and requires continuous supervision at one hour per five hours of face-to-face therapy.

The Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associate (LAMFTA) is a license, adopted in 2023, for graduates completing the two-year postgraduate supervision requirement; it lasts at most five (5) years at a 1:10 supervision ratio.

The LMFT is the independent license, and the board credentials supervisors separately as Supervisor Candidates, Approved Supervisors and Supervisor Mentors.

For how pre-licensure titles line up across states, see the LMSW, LPC-A and AMFT title alphabet.

β€œAn individual who has graduated from a regionally accredited educational institute with a master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy (or in an allied field with graduate level course work in marriage and family therapy) that meets the Board course, clinical internship, and supervision requirements, and is practicing marriage and family therapy under a Board approved supervisory arrangement to complete the minimum two-year postgraduate supervision requirement, as approved by the Board. An individual may remain licensed as an MFT Associate for a maximum of five (5) years.”

A 48-semester-hour degree: COAMFTE, CACREP MCFC, or the content equivalent

πŸ“œ Ala. Admin. Code r. 536-X-5-.01; 536-X-2-.05(3)

The degree is a master's in marriage and family therapy of at least 48 graduate semester hours or 72 graduate quarter hours at a regionally accredited college or university.

It must come from a COAMFTE-accredited program, a CACREP Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling (MCFC) accredited program, or be the content equivalent of either.

Content equivalent means graduate coursework in six designated areas β€” marriage and family studies, marriage and family therapy (three courses minimum), human development, professional ethics, research, and mental health diagnosis β€” plus other clinical treatment areas, equaling 48 semester hours.

One course counts as three semester credits, four quarter credits, or 42 didactic contact hours.

The associate rules separately accept a master's or doctoral degree in an allied field with graduate-level MFT coursework meeting the same Board course requirements.

Graduates of programs that were COAMFTE MCFC accredited or candidate programs at the time of graduation are deemed to have met the Board course requirements.

For why boards write program accreditation into the degree rule, see CSWE vs CACREP vs COAMFTE accreditation.

β€œContent equivalent is minimally defined as graduate course work in the six designated areas and other clinical treatment areas (e.g., assessment, abnormal psychology, group therapy, play-therapy, and sex-therapy) equaling 48 semester hours.”

An internship of 500 hours, then two years and 1,000 post-degree hours

πŸ“œ Ala. Admin. Code r. 536-X-2-.02(5)-(7); 536-X-2-.05(4)-(6)

First, an internship, during or after the qualifying degree: at least 12 months, 100 supervision hours concurrent at one hour per five direct client contact hours with at least 50 individual, and at least 500 direct client contact hours, 250 of them with couples or families physically present in the therapy room.

Second, the post-degree stage as a licensed MFT Associate: a minimum of two years, 1,000 post-degree direct client hours concurrent at one supervision hour per ten client contact hours, 250 relational hours with couples or families physically present, and 200 supervision hours including 100 individual.

Up to 100 of the 200 supervision hours can come from the graduate program at the 1:5 ratio; the remaining 100 post-degree hours must include at least 50 individual.

Group therapy counts toward direct hours but is not "relational" unless the members live within the same household.

Allied-field applicants or candidates without a graduate internship must complete the full supervision requirement post-degree; hours beyond the internship's 500 need a written letter from the Approved Supervisor or Program Director.

For what counts as a supervised hour, and what changes at independent licensure, see associate vs. independently licensed therapists.

β€œCompletion of two-hundred (200) hours of supervision, one-hundred (100) of which must be individual. Candidates may count up to one-hundred (100) supervision hours earned during the graduate program toward this requirement, when based on a ratio of one (1) supervision hour for every five (5) client contact hours completed concurrently.”

One Board-approved exam; no state law exam found in the rules

πŸ“œ Ala. Admin. Code r. 536-X-2-.02(4); 536-X-4-.07

The rule's examination requirement is brief: an applicant must have passed the marriage and family therapy examination approved by the Board.

The rule text does not name the test; the AMFTRB 2025 survey identifies it as the AMFTRB Examination in Marital and Family Therapy, which is an aggregate survey rather than the rule itself.

To sit for the exam, you must either have met all requirements for becoming an MFT Associate, or have a program director's letter verifying that you are in good standing and within six months of graduating from a COAMFTE or CACREP MCFC accredited program.

No separate Alabama law or jurisprudence exam appears in the rules read, so confirm the current exam and registration steps with the board before scheduling.

For how the counselor, social work and MFT licensing exams compare, see ASWB vs NCE vs NCMHCE vs the MFT national exam.

Who supervises, the supervision contract, and supervision by video

πŸ“œ Ala. Admin. Code r. 536-X-1-.01(7), (8), (12), (14); 536-X-4-.04

Alabama expects face-to-face supervision from a named list: AAMFT and ABEMFT Approved Supervisors and Supervisor Candidates.

Individual supervision is one supervisor and up to two supervisees face-to-face; group supervision may include no more than six supervisees.

A signed contract for supervision must be submitted with the associate or LMFT application, and no supervisee may have more than two supervisors without Board approval.

Peer supervision, supervision by a family member, administrative supervision and primarily didactic teaching do not count.

Face-to-face hours may be conducted via electronic communications only when simultaneously interactive visually and orally; the broader "telesupervision" definition at r.

536-X-1-.01(14) does not say how those hours count, so confirm with the board.

Becoming an ABEMFT Approved Supervisor runs through Supervisor Candidate status: the candidate must provide at least "nine (90)" hours of clinical supervision over not less than 12 months (words and digits disagree), supervise at least two supervisees for at least six months, and complete 18 hours of mentoring with an LMFT Supervisor Mentor.

Approved supervisors then need 5 supervision-CE hours every two years.

Whether you or your employer pays for that supervision is covered in who pays for clinical supervision.

β€œThe face-to-face supervision hours may be conducted via electronic communications by an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, AAMFT Supervisor Candidate, ABEMFT Approved Supervisor, or ABEMFT Supervisor Candidate. Acceptable electronic communication is defined as communication that is simultaneously interactive both visually and orally.”

Diagnosis and treatment inside the marriage and family therapy frame

πŸ“œ Ala. Admin. Code r. 536-X-1-.01(1)

The chapter defines the practice broadly and then fences it.

Marriage and family therapy is diagnosing, assessing and treating emotional, mental and behavioral disorders within a marriage and family therapy treatment context, using principles that treat individual problems as interrelated with family systems.

An LMFT may diagnose and develop treatment plans, but only within that frame and never beyond their training.

The rule then lists what the license does not authorize: administering and interpreting psychological tests and related instruments, admitting persons to hospitals, treating persons in hospitals without medical supervision, prescribing medicinal drugs, authorizing clinical laboratory or radiological procedures, and electroconvulsive therapy.

A licensee also may not describe any test, report or procedure as "psychological" or as a "psychological evaluation," and nothing in the chapter authorizes the practice of medicine.

β€œA licensed marriage and family therapist may diagnose and develop treatment plans, but shall not attempt to diagnose, treat, or advise a client with reference to problems or complaints falling outside the boundaries of marriage and family therapy services.”

Endorsement: automatic eligibility for licensees from any other US state

πŸ“œ Ala. Admin. Code r. 536-X-2-.03

Endorsement has two doors.

The general rule requires an applicant licensed or registered as an MFT in another state whose requirements are equivalent to or exceed the Board's, with certification from that board of licensure dates, discipline record and exam history.

The second door is the one that matters to most movers: licensees from any other US state are automatically eligible for an Alabama license by endorsement once the Board verifies moral character, evidence of licensure, no disciplinary actions, and a three-credit-semester or four-credit-quarter course in mental health diagnosis β€” a course a graduate's transcript may not include, so check it before moving.

The rule was amended effective October 15, 2023.

Separately, a nonresident MFT licensed elsewhere needs no Alabama license to provide services in this state for no more than three days in any month and no more than ten days in any calendar year.

There is no MFT compact; this is a board-to-board endorsement.

For how endorsement works when you move, see moving states as a therapist: license transfer and endorsement.

β€œLicensed MFT's from any of the other 49 states of the United States are automatically eligible for an Alabama licensure by endorsement following the verification of moral character, evidence of licensure, certification of no disciplinary actions, and verification of three credit semester or four credit quarter course in mental health diagnosis.”

Renewal every 24 months: 40 hours for LMFTs, 20 for associates, 10 for interns

πŸ“œ Ala. Admin. Code r. 536-X-6-.01

Every license runs on a 24-month cycle, and each rung has its own continuing education total.

An LMFT needs at least 40 contact hours, of which at least 10 must be clinical MFT workshops, 6 in diagnosis and treatment, and 6 in professional issues and ethics; LMFT supervisors add at least 5 hours in supervision.

An MFT Associate needs 20 hours (5 clinical MFT, 3 diagnosis and treatment, 3 ethics), and an Intern designation renews with 10 hours (3, 3, and 3).

Acceptable units include graduate courses, NBCC-approved courses, supervision under a board-approved contract up to 10 hours, and independent study capped at 10 hours.

Distance learning must be synchronous.

The board audits licensees at random, and documentation must be kept for two years.

β€œIn order for an LMFT license to be renewed, the licensee must have completed a minimum of forty (40) contact hours of acceptable Continuing Education or Experience Units during the previous twenty-four (24) months. A minimum of ten (10) of these hours must be clinical MFT workshops, a minimum of six (6) of these hours must be in the area of diagnosis and treatment, and a minimum of six (6) of these hours must be in the area of professional issues and ethics. LMFT supervisors must have completed a minimum of five (5) hours of continuing education in the content area of supervision.”

What changed from 2023 to 2025

πŸ“œ Ala. Admin. Code r. 536-X-2-.02; 536-X-2-.03; 536-X-2-.04; 536-X-2-.05; 536-X-3-.01

Three dated rule changes define the current Alabama system.

On October 15, 2023, the board adopted the LAMFTA rule 536-X-2-.04 and amended the endorsement rule 536-X-2-.03, turning the associate tier into a licensed one with its own five-year cap; a guide published before that date will not show a licensed associate at all.

The associate internship rule 536-X-2-.05 is a new rule the saved notes date only to their June 20, 2023 filing, with no effective date printed.

The LMFT requirements rule (536-X-2-.02) was amended effective February 14, 2025, and the designations rule (536-X-3-.01) effective March 17, 2025; the sources read do not isolate what those amendments changed, so quote the current rule text rather than a pre-2025 summary of it.

The two-year, 1,000-hour post-degree requirement sits in 536-X-2-.02, and the 500-hour internship it builds on is set in 536-X-2-.05(4).

Inactive status, restoration, and a 180-day military-spouse license

πŸ“œ Ala. Admin. Code r. 536-X-9-.01; 536-X-11-.01; Act 2018-540

An LMFT can move a license to inactive status by notifying the board, which excuses renewal fees β€” but an inactive licensee who uses the LMFT title in Alabama is treated as practicing without a license.

Restoring within five years takes fees and proof of continuing education for the prior two years; beyond five years, the board requires a new application plus either sworn evidence of active practice in another jurisdiction or 50 hours of board-approved supervision within the past two years.

Complete applications must reach the board two weeks before its next meeting.

Spouses of active-duty military members have their own route under the Military Family Jobs Opportunity Act: a license issued pending approval when the original state's requirements are substantially equivalent, an initial licensing fee waiver, and a temporary license to begin practice while finishing Alabama's requirements.

β€œPer the Military Family Jobs Opportunity Act (Act 2018-540), temporary licenses shall be issued to applicants for a 180-day period, so that the applicant can begin practice while completing any and all requirements for full licensure.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an MFT Intern and an MFT Associate in Alabama?

An MFT Intern holds a Board designation, not a license, for someone still enrolled in a qualifying program or still finishing one, practicing under an approved supervisor at one supervision hour per five hours of face-to-face therapy; the designation can be held at most four (4) years.

A Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associate (LAMFTA) is a license for a graduate completing the two-year postgraduate supervision requirement at one supervision hour per ten hours of face-to-face therapy, held at most five (5) years.

Both renew on the board's 24-month cycle with their own CE totals.

How many supervised hours does Alabama require for LMFT licensure?

Two stages.

The internship needs at least 12 months, 500 direct client contact hours, and 100 supervision hours earned concurrently at a 1:5 ratio, with at least 50 supervision hours individual; 250 of the 500 direct hours must be with couples or families physically present in the therapy room.

The post-degree stage as a licensed MFT Associate needs a minimum of two years, 1,000 post-degree direct client hours at a 1:10 supervision ratio, and 200 supervision hours including 100 individual, with up to 100 supervision hours credited from the graduate program at the 1:5 ratio.

Does Alabama accept LMFTs licensed in other states?

Yes, by endorsement.

The rule makes an LMFT licensed in any other US state automatically eligible for an Alabama license by endorsement after verification of moral character, evidence of licensure, certification of no disciplinary actions, and a three-credit-semester or four-credit-quarter course in mental health diagnosis.

There is no MFT compact, so this works by application to the board, not through a compact privilege to practice.

A nonresident licensed elsewhere may also practice in Alabama up to three days in any month and ten days in any calendar year without an Alabama license.

Can MFT supervision in Alabama be done by video?

For the face-to-face hours, the rule accepts supervision via electronic communications only when the supervisor is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, an AAMFT Supervisor Candidate, an ABEMFT Approved Supervisor, or an ABEMFT Supervisor Candidate, and only when the communication is simultaneously interactive both visually and orally, which describes live audio-video sessions.

The same definitions rule separately defines "telesupervision" as supervision through synchronous or asynchronous two-way electronic communication including telephone, videoconferencing, email, text, instant messaging and social media (r.

536-X-1-.01(14)), without saying how those hours count.

Confirm your supervision setup with the board.

Is there a state law exam for Alabama LMFTs?

No state jurisprudence or law exam appears in the board's rules as read.

The examination requirement is the marriage and family therapy examination approved by the Board (r.

536-X-2-.02(4)), which the AMFTRB survey identifies as the AMFTRB Examination in Marital and Family Therapy.

You can apply to sit the exam once you have met the associate requirements, or earlier with a program director's letter saying you are within six months of graduating from a COAMFTE or CACREP MCFC accredited program.

Confirm current exam logistics with the board.
