Therapist Salary in Virginia: Counselors, MFTs and Social Workers

Founder, BehavioralHires
Data: BLS OEWS May 2025

BLS publishes no therapist wage figure β€” it publishes three occupations, and in Virginia all three medians sit above their national figures.

Counselors, a combined occupation that also counts substance abuse counselors, had a median of $59,880, 1% above the national median.

Mental health and substance abuse social workers had a median of $64,240, 7% above theirs, and marriage and family therapists $79,900, 19% above.

The order matches the national one; the family therapist and social worker ceilings do not β€” both sit below their national figures.

Why three figures, not one

BLS publishes no occupation called β€œtherapist.” The title is filled by licences counted in separate occupations, so this page shows each one against its own national median and never averages them. None of the three is a figure for one licence alone.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS), May 2025 state and national estimates β€” Virginia, SOCs 21-1018, 21-1013, 21-1023.

Retrieved 2026-09-24 from the BLS Public Data API.

How to read these figures

These figures are U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates for three whole occupations across every employer in the state, from the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release. They are not listings on this site and not a quote for any particular job, and none of them is a figure for one licence alone. A percentile is a position in the state's wage distribution, not a pay step or an experience level, so check current postings and ask each employer how its pay is structured.

Virginia vs. the national figures, occupation by occupation

Each occupation is compared with its own national median from the same May 2025 release (national pages for counselors, marriage and family therapists, and social workers), and the national therapist salary page explains why the figures are never blended.

Ranks count only the jurisdictions (states plus DC) where BLS publishes that occupation’s figure.

OccupationVA medianNationalDiff.Rank by median
Counselors (combined) (21-1018)$59,880$59,350+1%25th of 51

MH & substance abuse social workers (21-1023)$64,240$60,280+7%13th of 51

Differences are whole percentages of the national figure, rounded half away from zero, computed from the figures shown.

By estimated employment, Virginia ranks 9th of 50 for counselors (combined), 9th of 40 for marriage and family therapists, 10th of 50 for mental health and substance abuse social workers.

Three medians, one direction

Virginia is a state where the three rows agree at the median: every one sits above its national figure.

The counselor median of $59,880 is 1% above the national $59,350, the social worker median of $64,240 is 7% above the national $60,280, and the family therapist median of $79,900 is 19% above the national $66,940.

The national order holds too β€” family therapists highest, counselors lowest.

But the gaps between the occupations are wider here than nationally: family therapists lead counselors by $20,020 at the Virginia median against $7,590 nationally, and lead social workers by $15,660 against $6,660.

Where the rows stop agreeing is the shape: only the counselor distribution is above national at every percentile, while the family therapist ceiling and the social worker ceiling both sit below theirs.

Counselors: national-scale at every percentile

The counselor row is the flattest of the three: Virginia sits above the national figure at every percentile, and never by much.

The 10th percentile of $39,730 is 2% above the national $38,940, the 25th percentile of $47,390 is 1% above $47,100, the median of $59,880 is 1% above $59,350, the 75th percentile of $77,870 is 2% above $76,530 and the 90th percentile of $100,040 is 3% above $97,590 β€” the widest of the five gaps.

The middle half spans $30,480 against a national band of $29,430, so the distribution is national in shape as well as level.

Ranked by median, Virginia sits 25th of the 51 jurisdictions that publish one for this occupation.

BLS estimates 17,940 counselors employed in Virginia, 9th of the 50 jurisdictions with a published employment estimate, so the percentiles rest on a large count.

This is a combined occupation: the figures describe every kind of counselor the row pools, not one licence.

What this figure covers: A COMBINED occupation: BLS publishes no wage series for licensed mental health counselors (LPC, LMHC, LPCC, LCPC) alone, so this figure pools them with substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors.

Nobody can tell from this release which way the blend pulls the figure.

Family therapists: a high middle with a short ceiling

The family therapist median of $79,900 ranks 7th of the 45 jurisdictions that publish one, and the hourly median of $38.41 sits $6.23 above the national $32.18.

The floor runs high too: the 10th percentile of $49,720 is 11% above the national $44,650 and the 25th percentile of $52,000 is 4% above $50,070.

The ceiling is the exception: the 75th percentile of $91,250 is 3% below the national $93,840 and the 90th percentile of $103,330 is 16% below $123,730.

The stretch from median to 90th spans $23,430 in Virginia against $56,790 nationally, so an offer near the middle of this distribution reads against national figures that sit below it, while an offer above the 75th percentile is past the point where the Virginia table still tracks national.

BLS estimates 930 family therapists employed in Virginia, tied for 9th of the 40 jurisdictions with a published employment estimate.

What this figure covers: An occupation of its own for marriage and family therapists β€” the only one of the three that is not a blend or a split.

Social workers: the advantage is at the floor

Mental health and substance abuse social workers have the largest floor advantage of the three rows: the 10th percentile of $48,530 is 22% above the national $39,740 and the 25th percentile of $53,620 is 14% above the national $47,070.

The advantage narrows as the distribution rises β€” the median of $64,240 is 7% above $60,280, the 75th percentile of $80,390 is 1% above $79,730, and the 90th percentile of $102,480 is 2% below the national $104,170.

The middle half spans $26,770 against a national band of $32,660.

For someone weighing an offer near the bottom of this distribution, the national percentiles understate the Virginia figures; near the top, they slightly overstate them.

BLS estimates 3,670 social workers employed in Virginia, 10th of the 50 jurisdictions with a published employment estimate, and the median ranks 13th of 51.

What this figure covers: Clinical social workers (LCSWs) are counted either here or in SOC 21-1022, healthcare social workers, depending on the setting of the job.

This page shows 21-1023 only, so it does not describe every LCSW.

Reading an offer against these figures

Start with the occupation the job would be counted in, and read the offer against that row rather than a blended number.

Hourly postings compare against the Virginia hourly medians: $28.79 for counselors, $38.41 for family therapists and $30.89 for mental health and substance abuse social workers.

The same dollar figure sits differently in each row: $64,240 is exactly the social worker median, $4,360 above the counselor median and $15,660 below the family therapist median, so a figure quoted without its occupation can mislead in either direction.

Read a percentile as a position in the state distribution, not a pay step: an offer at the 25th percentile of the counselor row, $47,390, says where the job sits among Virginia counselor jobs, and the family therapist 25th percentile of $52,000 is a different dollar figure for a different occupation.

Which Virginia licences these figures do and don't describe

None of the three rows is a licence figure.

The counselor row pools LPCs β€” the licence Virginia grants after a Resident in Counseling period β€” with substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors, and BLS publishes no LPC-only median for Virginia.

The family therapist row is the closest to a single licence, an occupation of its own for marriage and family therapists, whom Virginia licenses as the LMFT; the row is not split by licence stage, so it cannot say what a Resident in Marriage and Family Therapy earns.

Clinical social workers holding the LCSW are counted either in this social worker row or in healthcare social work, depending on the setting, so the $64,240 median does not describe every LCSW.

Virginia's LBSW and LMSW are social work licences below the clinical tier; no figure on this page describes them.

What each licence requires in Virginia is summarized in counselor licensure in Virginia, social work licensure in Virginia, and MFT licensure in Virginia.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the median therapist salary in Virginia?

There is no single figure, because BLS publishes no occupation called therapist.

For May 2025 it publishes three Virginia medians: $59,880 for counselors (a combined occupation that also counts substance abuse counselors), $79,900 for marriage and family therapists and $64,240 for mental health and substance abuse social workers.

All three sit above their national medians β€” by 1%, 19% and 7%.

Use the row for the occupation the job would be counted in.

Do marriage and family therapists or counselors earn more in Virginia?

At the median, marriage and family therapists: $79,900 against $59,880, a gap of $20,020 β€” wider than the national gap of $7,590 between the same two rows.

The gap does not narrow steadily along the distribution: it is $9,990 at the 10th percentile ($49,720 against $39,730), $4,610 at the 25th ($52,000 against $47,390), $13,380 at the 75th ($91,250 against $77,870) and $3,290 at the 90th ($103,330 against $100,040).

The gap is widest at the median and smallest at the 90th percentile.

What do the top 10% earn in each of the three occupations in Virginia?

The Virginia 90th percentile is $100,040 for counselors, $103,330 for marriage and family therapists and $102,480 for mental health and substance abuse social workers.

Against the national 90th percentiles those are 3% above, 16% below and 2% below.

The three ceilings sit within $3,290 of one another even though the medians are $20,020 apart at the widest β€” the gap between the occupations is far smaller at the top than at the median.

How many counselors, family therapists and social workers work in Virginia?

BLS estimates 17,940 counselors in the combined occupation, 930 marriage and family therapists and 3,670 mental health and substance abuse social workers employed in Virginia.

Those are headcounts of people in jobs during the survey period, not open positions.

By employment, Virginia ranks 9th of the 50 jurisdictions that publish an employment estimate for counselors, tied for 9th of 40 for family therapists and 10th of 50 for social workers.

The family therapist median is the highest of the three β€” is its whole distribution above national?

No. Through the median it is: the 10th percentile of $49,720 is 11% above the national $44,650, the 25th percentile of $52,000 is 4% above $50,070 and the median of $79,900 is 19% above $66,940.

From the 75th percentile up it is not: the 75th percentile of $91,250 is 3% below the national figure and the 90th percentile of $103,330 is 16% below the national $123,730.

The median ranks 7th of the 45 jurisdictions that publish one even as the 90th percentile sits below its own national counterpart.
