Nebraska never issues marriage and family therapy as a stand-alone license.
You pair a mental health practitioner license with a certified MFT (CMFT) certificate, and the pairing is the title: LMHP+CMFT is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT); LIMHP+CMFT, a licensed independent marriage and family therapist (LIMFT).
The usual ladder runs PLMHP, then LMHP+CMFT, then LIMHP+CMFT, though an exam-passed PLMHP can qualify for the LIMHP directly (38-2124(1)(a)(ii)(B)).
The certificate takes at least 3,000 post-degree hours, including 1,500 direct-client hours in the five years before you apply, plus the AMFTRB exam.

At a glance
Licensed independent marriage and family therapist (LIMFT) β a licensed independent mental health practitioner who also holds the certified marriage and family therapist certificate.
The title licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) marks an LMHP with the certificate, and an LMHP may not diagnose major mental illness except in consultation.
Provisionally licensed mental health practitioner (PLMHP) β a provisional license for a person who still needs the required three thousand hours of supervised experience; it expires on receipt of the mental health practitioner license or five years after issuance, whichever comes first (38-2123).
The Board of Mental Health Practice under the Nebraska DHHS Licensure Unit, a combined board whose eleven professional members include two certified marriage and family therapists, covering social work, counseling, art therapy and alcohol & drug counselors as well (38-2120).
For the CMFT certificate: a master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from a board-approved program, or a related graduate degree plus graduate coursework the board determines equivalent to an MFT master's (38-2133(1)(a)).
The LIMHP accredited-degree route names CACREP, COAMFTE or CSWE accreditation at graduation or within four years after (38-2124(1)(a)(i)(A)).
CMFT: at least 3,000 hours of marriage and family therapy experience under a qualified supervisor after the graduate degree, including at least 1,500 hours of direct-client contact during the five years preceding application and at least 100 hours of supervisor-supervisee contact, supervision at least one hour per week or two hours every two weeks (38-2133(1)(b)).
The LMHP license carries its own 3,000 hours with 1,500 direct (38-2122(2)); the LIMHP requires 3,000 hours supervised by a licensed physician, psychologist or LIMHP, half with major-mental-illness clients (38-2124(1)(a)(iii); 7,000 over not less than ten years on the non-accredited route, (1)(b)).
The AMFTRB examination for applicants whose degree is in marriage and family therapy or its equivalent (DHHS Examination Application); the Nebraska jurisprudence examination attaches to the endorsement routes (38-2125(1)(b), (3)(c)).
Shall issue: the department issues an LMHP or LIMHP license to a marriage and family therapist holding a valid, independent, unrestricted MFT license in another state or territory in good standing, with application, fees and the Nebraska jurisprudence exam (38-2125(3)); the same terms issue the CMFT certificate (38-2130(2)).
Credentials expire September 1 of even-numbered years; 32 clock hours of CE with at least 4 in ethics, and LIMHPs add at least 6 hours on diagnosis and treatment of major mental disorders each renewal period (DHHS page).
A provisional license, not a registration: a person who needs to obtain the required three thousand hours of supervised experience must obtain a provisional mental health practitioner license, which expires on receipt of the mental health practitioner license or five years after the date of issuance, whichever comes first (38-2123(1), (4)).
A title, not a stand-alone license: it belongs to a person licensed as a mental health practitioner and certified as a marriage and family therapist (38-2116(2)(c)).
The license authorizes mental health practice, but diagnosing major mental illness is excluded except in consultation with a qualified physician, licensed psychologist, LIMHP or compact-privilege counselor (38-2115(2)(d)).
The independent title: a person licensed as an independent mental health practitioner and certified as a marriage and family therapist may use it (38-2116(3)(c)), and the LIMHP license covers diagnosis and treatment of major mental illness without supervision or consultation (DHHS page), with 3,000 hours supervised by a licensed physician, psychologist or LIMHP, half with major-mental-illness clients (38-2124(1)(a)(iii); 7,000 over not less than ten years on the non-accredited route, (1)(b)).
Nebraska's Mental Health Practice Act licenses mental health practitioners and, layered on that license, certifies the specialties β marriage and family therapy is a certification, not a license of its own.
The title licensed marriage and family therapist belongs to a person who is licensed as a mental health practitioner and certified as a marriage and family therapist, and licensed independent marriage and family therapist to a licensed independent mental health practitioner holding the same certificate (38-2116(2)(c), (3)(c)).
A graduate who still needs supervised hours starts on a provisional mental health practitioner license, which expires on receipt of the full license or five years after issuance, whichever comes first (38-2123(4)).
DHHS states the design directly: the certification changes the title, not the scope of practice.
For how pre-licensure titles line up across states, see the LMSW, LPC-A and AMFT title alphabet.
βAdding a certification to your license allows you to use a different title - it does not offer a different scope of practice/activity.β
For the certified marriage and family therapist certificate, the degree is a master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from a program approved by the board, or a graduate degree in a field the board determines related to marriage and family therapy plus graduate coursework the board determines equivalent to an MFT master's (38-2133(1)(a)).
The certificate rule names no accreditor; board approval is defined in 38-2104, which treats programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education or the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs as approved educational programs, and lets approval also rest on accreditation by an agency with similar requirements or on standards the board establishes.
Accreditation turns decisive at the next rung: the LIMHP route (a) requires a degree accredited by CACREP, COAMFTE or CSWE at graduation or within four years after (38-2124(1)(a)(i)(A)), while a degree outside that route carries a 7,000-hour alternative earned over not less than ten years (38-2124(1)(b)).
For why boards write program accreditation into the degree rule, see CSWE vs CACREP vs COAMFTE accreditation.
The certificate requires at least 3,000 hours of experience in marriage and family therapy under a qualified supervisor following receipt of the graduate degree, with a recency window inside: at least 1,500 hours of direct-client contact during the five years preceding application for certification.
The client-contact hours must also include at least 100 hours of supervisor-supervisee contact, with supervision at least one hour per week or two hours every two weeks (38-2133(1)(b)).
The license underneath carries its own block: 3,000 hours of supervised experience in mental health practice, of which 1,500 were in direct client contact, accumulated after the master's degree (38-2122(2)); the LIMHP requires 3,000 hours supervised by a licensed physician, psychologist or LIMHP, one-half with clients diagnosed under the major mental illness category (38-2124(1)(a)(iii)), or 7,000 hours over not less than ten years on the non-accredited route (38-2124(1)(b)).
Whether the certificate and license blocks may be the same hours is a rules question (172 NAC 94) the sources read could not answer β ask the Licensure Unit before counting one set of hours toward both.
For what counts as a supervised hour, and what changes at independent licensure, see associate vs. independently licensed therapists.
βThe three thousand hours shall include at least one thousand five hundred hours of direct-client contact during the five years preceding application for certification. During the course of completing the client-contact hours, there shall be at least one hundred hours of supervisor-supervisee contact hours with a qualified supervisor and supervision shall be provided at least one hour per week or two hours every two weeksβ
The exam follows the degree.
Under the DHHS examination application, an applicant whose degree is in marriage and family therapy or its equivalent must pass the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards examination; counseling-degree applicants sit the NCE or NCMHCE, and social work applicants the ASWB examination.
The process runs through the Licensure Unit: submit the examination application with an official transcript, receive an authorization letter, then register with the testing service.
The form notes that most testing services require a 90-day wait before retesting and that there is no limit on the number of times an individual may test.
The Nebraska jurisprudence examination belongs to the endorsement routes, not this initial-exam track (38-2125(1)(b), (3)(c)).
For how the counselor, social work and MFT licensing exams compare, see ASWB vs NCE vs NCMHCE vs the MFT national exam.
βIf the applicant's degree is in marriage and family therapy or its equivalent, the applicant must pass the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards examination (AMFTRB).β
The qualified-supervisor definition has two branches: a licensed mental health practitioner, a licensed psychologist, or a licensed physician holding an approved-supervisor designation from an association that establishes marriage and family therapy standards; or a marriage and family therapist who has practiced for five years and completed a five-hour supervision course (38-2133(2)(b)).
Supervision itself is face-to-face contact in which you apprise the supervisor of the diagnosis and treatment of each client and the supervisor provides oversight, guidance and evaluation; to be credited it must focus on raw data from your clinical work β written clinical materials, direct observation, video and audio recordings β and be distinguishable from personal psychotherapy or didactic instruction (38-2133(2)(c)).
The statute leaves the individual-to-group proportion to board rules (172 NAC 94), which were not among the sources read.
Two cautions for planning: whether videoconference contact satisfies the face-to-face wording is not stated in the sources read, and a circulating figure of one supervision hour per ten client-contact hours does not match the statute's at-least-100 contact hours on the weekly or biweekly cadence.
Whether you or your employer pays for that supervision is covered in who pays for clinical supervision.
βSupervision means face-to-face contact between an applicant and a qualified supervisor during which the applicant apprises the supervisor of the diagnosis and treatment of each client, the clients' cases are discussed, the supervisor provides the applicant with oversight and guidance in treating and dealing with clients, and the supervisor evaluates the applicant's performance.β
Mental health practice β what the LMHP license authorizes β expressly excludes diagnosing major mental illness or disorder except in consultation with a qualified physician, a licensed psychologist, a licensed independent mental health practitioner, or a professional counselor holding a privilege to practice in Nebraska under the Licensed Professional Counselors Interstate Compact (38-2115(2)(d)).
The psychotherapy exclusion in (2)(f) carries a shorter consultation list β using psychotherapy with individuals suspected of having major mental or emotional disorders is excluded except in consultation with a qualified physician, a licensed psychologist, or a licensed independent mental health practitioner, with no compact-privilege counselor named.
The DHHS page frames the tier split the same way: the licensed mental health practitioner does not include diagnosing major mental illness except in consultation, while the licensed independent mental health practitioner includes diagnosis and treatment of major mental illness without supervision or consultation.
A therapist whose job assumes independent diagnosis of serious mental illness therefore needs the LIMHP rung.
Neither tier may represent itself as a physician or psychologist (38-2116(4)).
βPersons who are certified under the Mental Health Practice Act but who do not hold a license under section 38-2122 or a privilege to practice in Nebraska as a professional counselor under the Licensed Professional Counselors Interstate Compact shall not engage in mental health practice.β
For a marriage and family therapist licensed elsewhere, the department shall issue a mental health practitioner license or an independent mental health practitioner license to an applicant who holds a valid, independent, and unrestricted MFT license in good standing in another state or territory, completes the application, pays the fees, and has passed the Nebraska jurisprudence examination (38-2125(3)).
The parallel certificate route issues the CMFT certificate on the same terms (38-2130(2)), so a relocating therapist assembles the license-plus-certificate pair rather than converting one document into another.
A military spouse may apply for a temporary license or certificate (38-2125(4); 38-2130(3)), and the general reciprocity route in 38-2125(1)(b) β at least five years of active practice after initial licensure elsewhere plus the jurisprudence exam β is a may-issue alternative.
There is no MFT interstate compact, so this endorsement is the way in.
For how endorsement works when you move, see moving states as a therapist: license transfer and endorsement.
βThe department, with the recommendation of the board, shall, based on licensure in another jurisdiction, issue a mental health practitioner license or an independent mental health practitioner license to a marriage and family therapist who: (a) Has a valid, independent, and unrestricted license as a marriage and family therapist in another state or territory that is in good standing with such state or territory; (b) Completes an application and pays all applicable fees; and (c) Has passed the Nebraska jurisprudence examination.β
Renewal runs on one calendar for licenses and certificates alike: the expiration date is September 1 of even-numbered years.
Each renewal carries 32 clock hours of continuing education, of which at least 4 hours must be ethics, and LIMHPs add at least 6 hours relating to diagnosis and treatment of major mental disorders each renewal period.
Nebraska does not review or approve CE offerings, so keeping documentation is on you.
Because the LMFT and LIMFT titles exist only while the holder is both licensed and certified (38-2116), both credentials have to stay current for the title to hold; if a credential lapses, DHHS points to a reinstatement application covering the LMHP, LIMHP, CMFT, CMSW and CPC credentials.
βThe expiration date is September 1 of even-numbered years. CE: 32 clock hours. All licensees and certificate holders must complete at least 4 hours of CE in ethics each renewal period. LIMHPs must complete at least 6 hours of CE relating to diagnosis and treatment of major mental disorders each renewal period.β
Two 2026 amendments from LB912 are the ones an applicant feels.
The provisional-license statute now requires PLMHP applicants, beginning September 1, 2027, to obtain three hours of training relating to domestic abuse β screening tools, indicators of high lethality or risk, documentation standards, referrals, impact on children, ethics and boundaries, and trauma-informed, victim-centered care and safety planning (38-2123(1)(d), amended by Laws 2026, LB912, operative 2027-01-01).
The same act added 38-2122.01, requiring a minimum of two hours of continuing education in domestic abuse counseling every two years for all licensed mental health practitioners and licensed independent mental health practitioners; the sources read state the requirement but not its operative date.
Separately, the 38-2125 source note lists Laws 2025, LB257 as the latest amendment; the text read already contained the MFT full-endorsement subsection, and that LB257 added it is likely but not confirmed from the text read.
βEvery two years, a minimum of two hours of continuing education in domestic abuse counseling shall be required for all licensed mental health practitioners and licensed independent mental health practitioners under the Mental Health Practice Act.β
The provisional license is deliberately easy to enter: board rules may not require that an applicant have a supervisor in place at the time of application (38-2123(3)), so a new graduate can credential before lining up supervised hours.
Once practicing, the disclosure duty is strict β a PLMHP must inform all clients that he or she holds a provisional license and is practicing mental health under supervision, and must identify the supervisor; failure to make that disclosure is a ground for discipline (38-2123(5)).
Nor is the full LMHP license a mandatory stop on the way to the independent tier: 38-2124(1)(a)(ii)(B) accepts a PLMHP who has satisfactorily passed a board-approved examination (38-2122(3)) in its place, so the LIMHP is reachable directly.
The structure is the Act's own design, an omnibus license with associated certifications for social workers, professional counselors, marriage and family therapists and art therapists (38-2102), and the profession holds a seat at the table: two of the Board of Mental Health Practice's eleven professional members must be certified marriage and family therapists (38-2120).
This page summarizes the Nebraska statute, rules, board pages and other documents cited above, as read for this state-by-state MFT licensure series, current as of September 2026.
It does not list application forms, fees beyond those cited above, or processing times, and it is not a substitute for the instructions the Board of Mental Health Practice, Nebraska DHHS Licensure Unit publishes.
Nor does it cover counselor licensure in Nebraska, social work licensure in Nebraska, or what therapists earn in Nebraska.
Hour totals, exams and supervision rules change by statute and by board rule; for how the counselor, social work and MFT licences differ, see LCSW vs. LPC vs. LMFT: which therapy licence to get.
Confirm every requirement with the Board of Mental Health Practice, Nebraska DHHS Licensure Unit before you count hours, register for an exam or apply β and before you take one of the marriage and family therapist jobs in Nebraska that asks for it.
No. The title licensed marriage and family therapist exists only in combination: 38-2116 reserves it for a person who is licensed as a mental health practitioner and certified as a marriage and family therapist.
DHHS puts it plainly β adding a certification to your license changes the title, not the scope of practice.
If you are verifying a Nebraska therapist, check both the license and the certificate, and check which license tier stands underneath the title, because the LMHP tier may not diagnose major mental illness except in consultation.
The statute sets two blocks: 38-2122(2) requires 3,000 hours of supervised mental health practice experience for the license, and 38-2133(1)(b) requires 3,000 hours of marriage and family therapy experience for the certificate.
Whether the same hours may serve both is addressed in board rules (172 NAC 94) that were not among the sources read for this page.
Ask the DHHS Licensure Unit before you plan to count one set of hours toward both credentials.
The statute defines supervision for the certificate as face-to-face contact between an applicant and a qualified supervisor (38-2133(2)(c)) and does not say whether videoconference contact qualifies.
The board's administrative rules (172 NAC 94) were not among the sources read for this page, so this page cannot answer it.
Confirm with the DHHS Licensure Unit before relying on remote supervision for any of the 100 supervisor-supervisee contact hours.
Through a shall-issue endorsement.
Under 38-2125(3) the department shall issue a mental health practitioner license, or an independent mental health practitioner license, to a marriage and family therapist with a valid, independent, unrestricted MFT license in good standing in another state or territory who applies, pays the fees, and passes the Nebraska jurisprudence examination.
A parallel route (38-2130(2)) issues the CMFT certificate, and military spouses may apply for a temporary license or certificate.
There is no MFT compact.
It expires on receipt of your mental health practitioner license or five years after the date of issuance, whichever comes first (38-2123(4)).
While you hold it you must inform every client that you hold a provisional license and are practicing mental health under supervision, and identify your supervisor β failure is a ground for discipline (38-2123(5)).
Beginning September 1, 2027, PLMHP applicants must also complete three hours of training relating to domestic abuse under LB912.
