Why three figures, not one

BLS publishes no occupation called “therapist.” The title is filled by licences counted in separate occupations, so this page shows each one against its own national median and never averages them. None of the three is a figure for one licence alone.

How to read these figures

These figures are U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates for three whole occupations across every employer in the state, from the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release. They are not listings on this site and not a quote for any particular job, and none of them is a figure for one licence alone. A percentile is a position in the state's wage distribution, not a pay step or an experience level, so check current postings and ask each employer how its pay is structured.

Nebraska vs. the national figures, occupation by occupation

Each occupation is compared with its own national median from the same May 2025 release (national pages for counselors, marriage and family therapists, and social workers), and the national therapist salary page explains why the figures are never blended.

Ranks count only the jurisdictions (states plus DC) where BLS publishes that occupation’s figure.

OccupationNE medianNationalDiff.Rank by median

Differences are whole percentages of the national figure, rounded half away from zero, computed from the figures shown.

By estimated employment, Nebraska ranks 36th of 50 for counselors (combined), 24th of 40 for marriage and family therapists, 35th of 50 for mental health and substance abuse social workers.

Two medians nearly tied, one far below them

Nebraska's three medians split into a pair and an outlier.

The counselor median of $63,770 is $4,420 above the national $59,350, and the family therapist median of $62,610 is $4,330 below the national $66,940 — leaving the two just $1,160 apart.

The social worker median of $43,240 is $17,040 below the national $60,280, a 28% gap.

The national order does not survive the trip: nationally the family therapist median leads counselors by $7,590, and social workers edge counselors by $930, while in Nebraska counselors lead family therapists by $1,160 and lead social workers by $20,530.

Any one Nebraska figure for the whole title would have to hide one of these directions, which is why this page shows all three.

Counselors: ahead of national at the median, widest at the ceiling

The Nebraska counselor median of $63,770 is $4,420 above the national $59,350, and in dollars the advantage widens toward the top: the 75th percentile of $81,740 is $5,210 above the national $76,530, and the 90th percentile of $109,610 is $12,020 above the national $97,590, a 12% gap.

The floor is more uneven: the 10th percentile of $42,400 sits $3,460 above its national figure, yet the 25th percentile of $47,040 is $60 below the national $47,100, which rounds to even.

The middle half of the distribution spans $34,700 against a national band of $29,430, and the 10th-to-90th span is $67,210 against $58,650, so the extra width sits above the middle.

BLS estimates 2,170 counselors employed in the state, and the median ranks 9th of the 51 jurisdictions that publish one.

This is a combined occupation, so the figures describe every kind of counselor it pools, not one licence.

What this figure covers: A COMBINED occupation: BLS publishes no wage series for licensed mental health counselors (LPC, LMHC, LPCC, LCPC) alone, so this figure pools them with substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors.

Nobody can tell from this release which way the blend pulls the figure.

Family therapists: just below national, on a small sample

Nebraska marriage and family therapists had a median of $62,610, $4,330 below the national median of $66,940, a 6% gap.

The hourly median shows the same distance, $30.10 against $32.18 nationally.

BLS estimates 260 family therapists employed in Nebraska, and by the median the state ranks 24th of the 45 jurisdictions that publish one.

That employment estimate is small: this page flags it, and quotes only the median for this occupation.

The percentiles the table under this section prints rest on that thin estimate, so treat them as indications rather than figures to plan around.

Employment26066,740—

What this figure covers: An occupation of its own for marriage and family therapists — the only one of the three that is not a blend or a split.

⚠️ BLS's employment estimate for this occupation in Nebraska is 260 — under 500, so these percentiles rest on a small sample.

Read the median; treat the tails with caution.

Social workers: below national at every percentile, and the gap widens upward

Mental health and substance abuse social workers in Nebraska sit below the national distribution at every published percentile, and the gap grows toward the top.

The 10th percentile of $35,760 is 10% below national; the 25th percentile of $37,230 is 21% below; the median of $43,240 is $17,040 below the national $60,280, a 28% gap; the 75th percentile of $51,890 is 35% below; and the 90th percentile of $59,160 is 43% below the national $104,170.

The middle half of the Nebraska distribution spans $14,660, against a national band of $32,660, and the full 10th-to-90th span is $23,400 against a national $64,430, so pay in this occupation clusters tightly around the median.

The hourly median is $20.79 against $28.98 nationally.

BLS estimates 900 employed in the state; the median ranks 47th of the 51 jurisdictions that publish one, and employment ranks 35th of 50.

What this figure covers: Clinical social workers (LCSWs) are counted either here or in SOC 21-1022, healthcare social workers, depending on the setting of the job.

This page shows 21-1023 only, so it does not describe every LCSW.

Reading an offer against these figures

Start with the occupation the job would be counted in, and compare against that row rather than a blended number.

An offer at the Nebraska counselor median of $63,770 would sit $1,160 above the family therapist median and $20,530 above the social worker median.

Hourly postings read the same way: the Nebraska hourly medians are $30.66 for counselors, $30.10 for family therapists and $20.79 for social workers.

The family therapist row carries a small-sample flag, so its median is the only figure this page uses to judge such an offer.

A percentile is a position in the state distribution, not a pay step, so an offer at the 25th percentile says where it sits among Nebraska jobs in that occupation, not a judgement about the person hired.

Which Nebraska licences these figures do and don't describe

None of the three rows is a licence figure.

The counselor row pools substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors with licensed counselors, and Nebraska does not issue a stand-alone counselor licence: the state licenses the cross-discipline PLMHP, LMHP and LIMHP tiers, with the CPC certification layered on for counselors, and BLS publishes no counselor-only median for the state.

The family therapist row is the closest to a single occupation.

Nebraska titles LMFT (an LMHP licence plus the CMFT certification) and LIMFT (LIMHP plus CMFT), with the PLMHP provisional licence before them, but OEWS does not split the row by licence stage, so it cannot say what a PLMHP holder earns.

Nebraska issues no stand-alone LCSW: the LCSW title pairs an LMHP licence with the CMSW certificate, and the LICSW title pairs LIMHP with CMSW.

Clinical social workers are counted either in this social worker row or in healthcare social work, depending on the setting, so the $43,240 median does not describe every Nebraska LCSW.

What each licence requires in Nebraska is summarized in counselor licensure in Nebraska, social work licensure in Nebraska, and MFT licensure in Nebraska.

The small-sample caveat

One of the three rows carries a small-sample flag: marriage and family therapists.

BLS estimates 260 employed in Nebraska, small enough that the page flags that table, so this page quotes only the occupation's median and builds no analysis on its percentiles.

The counselor row, at an estimated 2,170, and the social worker row, at an estimated 900, are not flagged.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the median therapist salary in Nebraska?

There is no single figure, because BLS publishes no occupation called therapist.

For May 2025 it publishes three Nebraska medians: $63,770 for counselors (a combined occupation that also counts substance abuse counselors), $62,610 for marriage and family therapists and $43,240 for mental health and substance abuse social workers.

The counselor median is 7% above its national median; the other two are 6% and 28% below theirs.

Use the row for the occupation the job would be counted in.

Do counselors or marriage and family therapists earn more in Nebraska?

At the median, counselors, by $1,160: $63,770 against $62,610.

That is the reverse of the national picture, where the family therapist median of $66,940 leads the counselor median of $59,350 by $7,590.

One caution: the Nebraska family therapist employment estimate is small, so the page flags that row and quotes only its median.

The social worker median of $43,240 trails both.

What do the top 10% of counselors and social workers earn in Nebraska?

The Nebraska 90th percentile is $109,610 for counselors, 12% above the national $97,590, and $59,160 for mental health and substance abuse social workers, 43% below the national $104,170.

This page does not quote a 90th percentile for marriage and family therapists, whose Nebraska employment estimate is small; the flagged table prints it.

How many counselors, family therapists and social workers work in Nebraska?

BLS estimates 2,170 counselors in the combined occupation, 260 marriage and family therapists and 900 mental health and substance abuse social workers employed in Nebraska.

Those are headcounts of people in jobs during the survey period, not open positions.

By employment, Nebraska is tied for 36th of 50 jurisdictions for counselors, tied for 24th of 40 for family therapists, and ranks 35th of 50 for social workers, counting only those where BLS publishes an employment estimate.
