LMFT Licensure in South Dakota: Requirements, Hours and Exams

Founder, BehavioralHires
Last verified September 2026

South Dakota licenses marriage and family therapists under SDCL chapter 36-33 through the Board of Examiners for Counselors & Marriage and Family Therapists.

There is no associate license: after a 48-credit degree you accrue hours as a supervisee under a board approved post graduate plan of supervision.

Licensure takes 1,700 supervised hours within the four years before you apply β€” at least 1,600 direct client contact, at least 100 supervision β€” plus a pass on the AMFTRB National Examination in Marital and Family Therapy.

Licenses renew each even-numbered November.

Verify before you rely on this

Licensing rules change by statute and board rule, and this page is career information, not legal advice. Confirm every requirement with the state board before you apply, register for an exam or count supervised hours. In South Dakota, that is the South Dakota Board of Examiners for Counselors & Marriage and Family Therapists.

At a glance

Independent title

Marriage and family therapist (licensed) β€” the one MFT license SDCL chapter 36-33 creates; no separate clinical tier appears in the sources read.

Pre-licensure title

None licensed β€” the hour-earner is a supervisee under a board approved post graduate plan of supervision (ARSD 20:71:05:00(4)), a plan approval valid two years and renewable one time (20:71:02:05), not a credential.

Regulator

The South Dakota Board of Examiners for Counselors & Marriage and Family Therapists β€” the SDCL chapter 36-33 board, which also licenses counselors.

Degree

A master's or doctoral degree of at least 48 credit hours in marriage and family therapy from an accredited MFT program recognized by the board, or a board-approved equivalent (SDCL 36-33-43(1)); 48 semester credit hours equal 72 quarter credit hours (ARSD 20:71:02:13).

COAMFTE is not named in the statute.

Post-degree experience

1,700 hours of supervised experience under a board-approved plan within the four-year period preceding the application, all after the degree: at least 1,600 direct client contact (no more than 1,000 by electronic means) and at least 100 supervision, no more than 50 of them group.

No couples-and-families figure and no minimum duration are stated.

Exams

The Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Board's National Examination in Marital and Family Therapy, required by ARSD 20:71:03:01; the board may accept an examination it deems equivalent.

Endorsement

SDCL 36-33-45: licensed as an MFT in another state or territory for at least three years, in good standing, in active practice during that period (at least 1,500 hours of clinical experience), a board-approved national examination passed, and no unprofessional-conduct record; a temporary license expires after ninety days or upon passing the exam.

Renewal & CE

The license is valid until November 30 of the next even-numbered year following issuance (SDCL 36-33-49); renewal takes 40 hours of qualified continuing education per two-year cycle, at least 4 on marriage and family ethics (ARSD 20:71:06:21).

The South Dakota credential ladder

  1. Supervisee under a post graduate plan of supervisionPre-licensure

A plan approval, not a license: ARSD 20:71:05:00(4) defines a supervisee as an applicant for licensure acquiring necessary post graduate supervision hours under a board approved post graduate plan of supervision, which must be approved before any hour counts, is valid two years from issuance and may be renewed one time.

  2. Temporary licenseOther

A time-limited license for an applicant licensed in another state: ARSD 20:71:02:08 provides that it automatically expires ninety days after the date of issuance or upon passage of the National Examination in Marital and Family Therapy, and may be renewed one time.

  3. Licensed Marriage and Family TherapistIndependent

The one marriage and family therapy license under SDCL chapter 36-33, issued on the 48-credit degree, a standardized national examination, and 1,700 hours of supervised experience completed within the four-year period preceding the application (SDCL 36-33-43).

  4. Approved supervisorSupervisor

A board approval, not a separate license: an applicant who is licensed as a professional counselor-mental health or as a marriage and family therapist, in good standing, and qualifies under a route of ARSD 20:71:05:01, approved by the board to provide post graduate supervision.

One license, and a supervisee plan instead of an associate license

πŸ“œ ARSD 20:71:05:00(4); 20:71:02:05; 20:71:02:08

South Dakota issues one MFT license and nothing licensed below it.

A graduate who needs post-degree hours applies for a board approved post graduate plan of supervision, and the rule defines that person as a supervisee β€” an applicant acquiring the necessary post graduate supervision hours under the approved plan β€” not a licensee of any kind.

Timing is the trap: the plan must be board-approved before any supervision experience starts counting toward licensure, it is valid for two years from issuance and may be renewed one time, with the renewal application due at least 30 days before expiration.

A separate plan application is required for each proposed supervisor, and the board may grant an extension for extenuating circumstances or undue hardship.

The only other instrument below the license is a temporary license for out-of-state endorsement applicants, which expires automatically after ninety days or upon passage of the national examination.

For how pre-licensure titles line up across states, see the LMSW, LPC-A and AMFT title alphabet.

β€œA board approved post graduate plan of supervision is valid for two years from the date of issuance. An approved post graduate plan of supervision may be renewed one time.”

A 48-credit degree, with three program routes in the rule

πŸ“œ SDCL 36-33-43(1); ARSD 20:71:02:10; 20:71:02:11; 20:71:02:12; 20:71:02:13

The degree is a master's or doctorate of at least 48 credit hours in marriage and family therapy from an accredited MFT program recognized by the board, or an equivalent course of study the board approves; COAMFTE is not named in the statute.

The rule supplies the structure: the institution must hold accreditation from one of six regional accreditors, and an approved program is one accredited by COAMFTE, one with CACREP specialty training in marriage and family counseling or therapy, or an organized sequence of study covering marriage and family studies, therapy, human development, professional studies and research, with a practicum of one year minimum at 15 hours per week and at least 300 client contact hours.

ARSD 20:71:02:12 is the makeup rule for a degree missing an element: fewer than 48 credits, the missing supervised professional practicum, or missing prescribed coursework may be completed post degree, capped at 12 semester credits counted only toward the academic requirements of the organized-sequence route (20:71:02:11(3)), and verified before a post graduate plan of supervision will issue.

For why boards write program accreditation into the degree rule, see CSWE vs CACREP vs COAMFTE accreditation.

1,700 hours inside a four-year window, all after the degree

πŸ“œ SDCL 36-33-43(3); ARSD 20:71:05:02; 20:71:05:00(1)

Plan around two facts: the 1,700 hours must fall within the four-year period preceding the application, and every one of them comes after the degree.

Within the total, the rule requires at least 1,600 hours of direct client contact β€” no more than 1,000 acquired through counseling provided by electronic means, the rest in person β€” and at least 100 hours of supervision with a board approved supervisor, at least one supervision hour per 20 direct client contact hours, with no more than 50 of the 100 in group supervision.

Supervision must include at least five hours each of case presentation and staffing, direct observation through in-person or recorded sessions, co-counseling, and review of supervisee recordkeeping.

Also: up to 100 hours of the supervisee's own personal counseling or therapy count as direct client contact, and a contact hour is at least 50 minutes, accumulated in 15- or 20-minute increments.

The rules state no separate couples-and-families hour figure and no minimum duration, and the board may grant a license past the four-year limit for good cause.

For what counts as a supervised hour, and what changes at independent licensure, see associate vs. independently licensed therapists.

β€œWithin the four-year period preceding the application, the applicant completed one thousand seven hundred hours of supervised experience in marriage and family therapy under a plan of supervision approved by the board subsequent to the applicant receiving an acceptable degree”

The AMFTRB National Examination, named in the rule

πŸ“œ ARSD 20:71:03:01; 20:71:02:06; 20:71:02:09; SDCL 36-33-43(2)

The rule names the examination outright: the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Board's National Examination in Marital and Family Therapy is required for licensure as a marriage and family therapist, and the board may accept an examination it deems equivalent.

The statute states the same requirement in general terms, a standardized national examination approved by the board.

The license application includes verification of a passing score alongside the documentation of the 1,700 hours.

The exam rule was last amended effective November 24, 2022, and the research found no 2023–2026 change.

It also matters after licensure: reinstating an expired license requires verification of a passing score earned after the date the original license expired.

For how the counselor, social work and MFT licensing exams compare, see ASWB vs NCE vs NCMHCE vs the MFT national exam.

β€œThe Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Board's National Examination in Marital and Family Therapy is required for licensure as a marriage and family therapist.”

Who can supervise, and what happens if their approval lapses

πŸ“œ ARSD 20:71:05:01; 20:71:05:02; 20:71:05:07; 20:71:05:09

A supervisor must be licensed as a professional counselor-mental health (LPC-MH) or as a marriage and family therapist, in good standing, and qualify by: actively licensed at least two years with at least four hours of supervision-focused continuing education in the two years before the application; actively licensed at least one year with at least 15 such hours; or holding American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy approved clinical supervisor status.

Choosing one is a scheduling decision, not just a clinical one β€” supervisor approval runs to November 30 of the next even-numbered year, renews on four hours of supervision-focused CE, and if the supervisor fails to renew, the approval and every post graduate plan authorized with that supervisor automatically expire.

Only hours acquired with a board approved supervisor under an approved plan are compliant, recorded on a form the board provides.

Supervision is individual (one supervisor with up to two supervisees) or group (three or more); a supervisee may have multiple supervisors under separate plan applications, and supervision by electronic means must be synchronous.

Whether you or your employer pays for that supervision is covered in who pays for clinical supervision.

β€œSupervision may take place by electronic means, as prescribed by chapter 20:71:08 and must be synchronous.”

Moving to South Dakota: three years licensed and a 90-day temporary license

πŸ“œ SDCL 36-33-45; ARSD 20:71:02:07; 20:71:02:08

SDCL 36-33-45 is the route for a clinician already licensed elsewhere: the board may license an applicant licensed as an MFT in another state or territory who shows licensure under the other jurisdiction's authority for at least three years before applying, good standing, active practice during the three-year period, a pass on a standard national examination approved by the board, and no record of unprofessional conduct or pending disciplinary complaints.

Active practice is a defined term β€” at least 1,500 hours of clinical experience.

An endorsement applicant may first hold a temporary license, which expires automatically ninety days after issuance or upon passing the National Examination and may be renewed one time, useful while the exam is in progress.

No MFT interstate compact existed as of September 2026, so endorsement is the route; match your state's hour record against South Dakota's 1,700-hour structure before you apply.

For how endorsement works when you move, see moving states as a therapist: license transfer and endorsement.

β€œFor purposes of this section, the term, active practice, means at least one thousand five hundred hours of clinical experience.”

Renew by November 30 of even-numbered years; 40 CE hours per cycle

πŸ“œ SDCL 36-33-49; 36-33-50; ARSD 20:71:06:20; 20:71:06:21; 20:71:06:22; 20:71:06:23

A license runs to November 30 of the next even-numbered year following issuance.

Missing that date is not a quiet grace period: failure to renew on or before November 30 of an even-numbered year automatically suspends the license, and a licensee has thirty days after the expiration date to submit the renewal application and proof of CE compliance.

Each continuing education cycle is two years, December 1 of an even-numbered year through November 30 of the next, and requires 40 hours of qualified continuing education, at least four of them on marriage and family ethics.

CE is prorated in six-month increments for a licensee granted an initial license mid-cycle, completion records must be kept four years, and no qualified continuing education may be repeated in consecutive cycles.

β€œAny license issued under the provisions of this chapter is valid until November thirtieth of the next even-numbered year following the date of issuance.”

Electronic practice, personal therapy hours, and the ethics code

πŸ“œ ARSD 20:71:05:04; 20:71:05:11; 20:71:07:01; 20:71:08:02

Electronic practice has its own chapter: marriage and family therapy through electronic means must adhere to the article, HIPAA regulations and the article's ethical requirements β€” the chapter the rule invokes when it caps electronic direct client contact at 1,000 of the 1,600 hours.

Personal therapy counts too: up to 100 hours of the supervisee's own counseling or therapy, received from a professional counselor, professional counselor-mental health, certified social worker-private independent practice, psychologist, or psychiatrist β€” never the supervisee's own approved supervisor β€” may count as direct client contact, subject to verification by the board.

The board may also recognize direct client contact hours acquired under supervision approved and overseen by another South Dakota licensing board, if the hours meet the statutory definition of the practice of marriage and family therapy and are documented as the chapter prescribes.

Every licensee, supervisee and supervisor must comply with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Code of Ethics as of January 1, 2015.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does South Dakota license associate MFTs?

No associate license was found in the sources read.

A graduate who needs post-degree hours applies for a board approved post graduate plan of supervision and works as a supervisee; the plan must be approved before any experience counts, runs two years from issuance, may be renewed one time, and needs its renewal application at least 30 days before expiration.

The board can extend a plan for extenuating circumstances or undue hardship.

Ask the board before you start a job or count a single hour.

Can I count hours earned before my degree?

No. SDCL 36-33-43(3) requires the 1,700 hours to be completed subsequent to the applicant receiving an acceptable degree, and the license application documents hours obtained subsequent to the granting of the master's or doctoral degree (ARSD 20:71:02:06(5)).

The rule's 300-client-contact graduate practicum belongs to its organized-sequence program route; either way, no pre-degree hours shorten the 1,700.

Only hours acquired with a board approved supervisor under an approved plan are compliant, so get the plan approved first, and confirm any unusual arrangement with the board.

How is the 1,700 split between client contact and supervision?

The rule requires at least 1,600 hours of direct client contact and at least 100 hours of supervision with a board approved supervisor, at a rate of at least one supervision hour per 20 hours of direct client contact, with no more than 50 of the 100 in group supervision.

Supervision must include at least five hours each of case staffing, direct observation, co-counseling and recordkeeping review.

No separate couples-and-families hour figure and no minimum practice duration are stated.

Confirm your hour log format with the board, which prescribes the form.

Can the hours or the supervision be done by video?

Partly.

No more than 1,000 of the 1,600 direct client contact hours may be acquired through counseling provided by electronic means; the rest must be in person.

Supervision may take place by electronic means and must be synchronous, under the standards of chapter 20:71:08, which incorporate HIPAA and the article's ethical requirements.

Up to 100 hours of the supervisee's own personal therapy can also count as direct client contact.

Verify any telehealth plan with the board before you rely on it.

I'm licensed in another state. How do I move to South Dakota?

No MFT interstate compact existed as of September 2026, so the route is endorsement under SDCL 36-33-45: licensed as an MFT elsewhere for at least three years, in good standing, in active practice during that period (at least 1,500 hours of clinical experience), a board-approved national examination passed, and no unprofessional-conduct record.

You may qualify for a temporary license that expires after ninety days or when you pass the national exam, renewable once.

Start from the board's endorsement application to confirm your state's hours line up.
